국문 초록

근대계몽기 월보는 계몽운동 단체인 학회가 만든 잡지이다.본고는 대표적인 계몽운동 잡지인 대한자강회월보 를 대상으로,대한자강회 구성원들의 이질성을 밝혀내고 각각의 특징과 그 시대적 의의를 살펴보고자 한다. 첫 번째 그룹인 대원장부와 윤효정은 대일 협력적인 자세를 강력하게 추구했다. 대한자강회의 고문이었던 대원장부는 한국인에게 패배적 정서를 심어주면서,통감부의 지배를 일본의 배려로 설명하는 전략을 취했다.그는 문명국의 전범으로 일본을 제시하여,한국 지식인들로 하여금 일본의 강압적 제국주의의 면모를 직시하지 못하게 하고 성공적인 근대화 모델로 일본을 선망하게 하도록 유도했다. 두 번째 그룹인 장지연은 대의명분으로써 자강주의를 강조했다.그는 자강 정신을 국민에게 전하고 국권을 찾는 것이 회의 존립 근거이자 목표라고 역설했다. 그러나 그는 자강회의 실질적인 지향이 일본인 고문 대원장부와 통감부에 의해 대일 협력적 성향으로 조율되고 있음을 끝내 읽지 못했다. 제국주의의 침략적 본질을 은폐하는 수많은 담론 속에서 장지연은 일본의 보호 조치를 한국을 위한 배려라고 희망적으로 오독했다고 보았다. 세 번째 그룹인 이기와 박은식은 자강회 내의 한시적인 동조 세력이었다. 박은식은 6호에서,이기는 9호에서 실질적인 활동을 접었다.이들은 자강이라는 명분에 공감하여 활동을 시작했다가 대원장부의 부일적 성향,장지연의 원칙론적 방관주의에 한계를 느꼈던 것으로 보인다. 네 번째 그룹인 김성희,유근,설태희는 대한자강회월보 의 체제 정비기인 6호를 전후하여 영입되었다.신학문의 전달이라는 기능적 역할을 전담했던 이 그룹은 일본의 문명화에 강한 지적 선망을 갖고 있었을 것으로 짐작된다. 자강회 출신 인사들의 분화는 이질적 존재들의 분리와 부일적 성격의 강화로 요약된다.이기와 박은식은 향후 호남학회,서북학회에서 실질적인 운동성을 확보하기 위해 노력했고,대한자강회의 후신인 대한협회는 부일적성격을 더욱 강화해 나갔다.이러한 대한자강회의 운동성과 지향은 사실상근대주의를 내세운 이익집단적 성향을 잘 보여주는 것이며,이는 결과적으로 대한자강회가 근대계몽기의 시대 모순과 계급 모순의 집결체임을 증명해준다고 보았다.

영문 초록

In the Modern Enlightenment period, most of monthly reports were published by academic societies—identified as an edification movement group. Among them, this study is not only about the writers who contributed to the Daehan Self-reliant Association (DSA)’s Monthly issues—the most representative modern enlightenment magazine, but also probes into the existence of subgroups within the Association and their different characteristics. The first subgroup, including DaeWonJangBu and Yun Hyo-Jeong, strongly poses the pro-Japanese attitude. As an advisor of the DSA, DaeWonJangBu imbued a sense of defeatism into Koreans and so he justified the Japanese authorities’ control over the Korean peninsula. Also, he made Korean intellectuals blind to the nature of Japanese imperialism and led to glorify and admire Japan as a successful model of modernization. Jang Ji-Yeon, forming the second subgroup of the association, put an emphasis on self-reliance for a great cause; in fact, however, he neglected the colonized reality of his own country. His ambivalent attitude might be attributed partly to the contemporary popular discourse centered on Japan covering the invasive nature of imperialism. The third one was made up of Lee Gi and Park Eun-shik, who joined temporarily—Park left the group after the 6th issue and so did Lee after the 9thone. It is the reason that, at first, they were motivated by their common cause of self-reliance and independence from Japan but they seemed to realize its pro-Japanese tendency later on. The last group whose members are Kim Sung-Hee, Yu Gun and Sul Tae-Hee played a functional role in introducing foreign academic theories into Korea ; they seemed to have the strong intellectual respect for Japanese civilization. Such divisions among DSA writers can be summarized as factions by the heterogeneous members that splintered from one another and pro-Japanese characteristics enhanced. After then, Lee Gi and Park Eun-shik put every effort to find alternatives through from Honam Academic Association to North-West Academic Association. On the other hand, DaeWonJangBu, Yun Hyo-Jeoung, Kim Sung-hee, Sul Tae-he, and others took a stronger pro-Japanese stance through the Daehan Academic Association, a follow-up version of the DSA. To sum up, the DSA is thought to be a group dense with the mixture of the era’s contradiction and class struggle, as well as an interest group pursuing modernism.
