조선 시대 일기 자료의 실상과 가치

국문 초록

본 논문은 조선시대 일기 자료 가운데 개인 일기 중심으로 그 전반적 현황과 관련된 지식정보 구축 및 연구 성과를 조사 검토하여, 현재 남아있는 무수한 기록유산들 가운데 개인 일기 자료들이 어떤 형태와 모습으로 남아있으며 그 가치와 의미는 무엇인지 살펴보기 위해 작성되었다. 먼저, 일기 내용과 형식을 고려하여 유형별로 분류 개괄하였는데, ①종합생활 일기, ②사환일기, ③유배일기, ④기행일기, ⑤사행 일기, ⑥전쟁 일기, ⑦사건 견문일기, ⑧독서 강학일기, ⑨고종 상장례 일기 등 약 9가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 이 각각의 일기들은 그 유형마다 기록목적과 주요 내용에 따라 그 나름의 특징적 면모와 다양한 기록형태를 형성하고 있었다. 조선시대 일기자료 현전과 관련하여 살펴 본 조선시대 일기 자료에 대한 지식정보 구축 상황은 대체로 일기자체에 집중된 것이 아니라 목적 지향에 따라 다양한 형태의 지식정보 구축 속에서 일부분으로 이루어졌으므로, 하나로 연결되지 못하고 이리저리 흩어져 있어 현재로서는 일정한 한계가 있어 보였다. 그렇지만, 일기 자료에 대한 뜨거운 관심을 반영이라도 하듯 온라인의 기관 웹페이지나 오프라인의 기획 출판물 등 지식정보 구축이 지속적으로 확충되고 있는 것은 분명하였다. 일기 자료 연구는 자료발굴에 따른 가치 분석의 성과와 사료중심의 심화 연구로 대략 구분이 가능했다. 대개 자료 발굴과 관련해서는 시대적 흐름이 크게 중요하지 않았던 반면, 사료 중심의 심화 연구 측면에서는 특히 2000년대 들어서면서 더욱 활성화되고 있음을 볼 수 있었는데, 이는 미시적 일상 생활사 연구의 붐을 타고 연구 자료로서 적극 활용되었기 때문이었다. 조선시대 일기자료에 대한 지식정보 구축과 연구는 자료 경계 확장의 욕구를 토대로 상호간을 부추기며 지속적으로 그 저변을 확대해가고 있었다. 본 논문에서 조사 개괄한 약 950여권의 개인 일기는 전통시대 기록유산이란 점에서 일단 자료적 가치를 확보하였으며, 그 다음부터는 어떤 상황에서 어떻게 접근하느냐에 따라 가치와 의미가 유동적으로 달라지는 것으로 판단하였다. 저마다 다른 개인이 자신의 시각에서 기록한 것이기에, 무엇을 볼 것인가에 따라 일기 자료의 가치는 다각도에서 끌어낼 수 있으며 어느 일기에 어떻게 접근하느냐에 따라 연속적 재생산이 가능할 것으로 보였기 때문이다. 일부 시각에서는 역사 사료로서의 객관성 여부를 문제 삼기도 하지만, 자료 활용과 연구는 연구자의 몫이라는 측면에서 그러한 한계 때문에 일기 자료 자체의 가치와 의미가 퇴색될 수는 없을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the overall state of diary material of Joseon period, centered on private diaries and reviewed the performance of researches and informatization efforts. This paper aimed to find the forms and aspects of those diary material and know their values and meanings. The diary material can be classified into nine types by the contents and forms: ① common living diary, ② official post diary, ③ exile diary, ➃ travel diary, ➄ envoy diary, ➅ war-time diary, ➆ experience diary, ➇ reading diary, ⑨ deathbed diary. Each type has its own characteristics and versatile recording methods according to its purposes and main contents. There is no informatization system set up only for Joseon's diary material. Diary material are just forming parts of many informatization efforts with various purposes, not being linked together. However, as if it reflects the hot interests on diary material, informatization systems including websites of institutes or offline publications have surely been expanded. Diary material researches are composed mainly of the value analysis of discovered material and the depth study centered on historical documents. While material finding has not been different over the time periods, historical documents-centered depth studies have been activated especially more from 2000. It is because diary material were used widely as research material along with microscopic life history research boom. The research on Joseon's diary material and informatization system building continue to expanding their bases, encouraging each other, based on the common needs to extend boundaries. This paper examined 950 and more private diaries. They have basic value as conventional documentary legacy and could have different values and meanings according to how and from where they were approached. As diaries were written by different peoples and from their own viewpoints, their values could change from readers' viewpoints and the consecutive reproductions would be possible by readers' approaches. Some people doubt the objectivity of diaries as historical documents. Nevertheless, diaries' values and meanings cannot be cut down because the use and research of material is the researcher's job.
