영어권에서 문화지리학의 발전과 연구동향

국문 초록

카알 사우어의 지리학 연구는 어떤 문화집단이 자연경관을 어떻게 문화경관으로 변경시켜왔는지를 집중적으로 조명하였다. 그와 그의 제자들 (버클리 학파라고 알려짐)은 주로 비서구지역이나 미국의 시골 지역 문화와 환경을 역사지리적인 관점에서 다루었다. 그러나 1980년대부터 영국의 신문화지리학을 표방반 일부 하자들이 이러한 버클리 문화지리 전통을 그들이 문화를 초유기체로 받아 드렸고, 경관에 나타나 있는 물질문화 유물들이나 공부하는 반면, 경관형태 막후에서 작용해온 메카니즘을 이론적으로 설명하지 않았다고 하며 극력하게 비판했다. 신문화지리는 이제 경관을 텍스트로 보거나 보는 방법 정도로 다루고 있다. 신문화지리연구 토픽들 중에서 이 논문에서 다룬 것들은 텍스트로서의 경관, 상징물 해석으로서의 경관, 희미하게 지워진 경관, 음악경관, 자기와 다른 사람의 정체성 문제, 사회적 요소에 의하여 축조된 인종과 자연의 카테고리들, 텃밭 경관, 문학지리 및 필림 등의 영상경관 등이다. 그리고 이 논문은 전통적으로는 문화지리가 역사지리와 가장 밀접한 관계를 지니고 있다고 결론 내렸다.

영문 초록

Carl O. Sauer's geographic research emphasised how a certain cultural group could transform a physical landscape into a cultural landscape. He and his students (The Berkeley School)had a tendency to explore mainly historical topics of non-western culture or rural areas in the USA. However, since the 1980s a group of British geographers known as the promoters of "new cultural geography" severely criticised the Berkeley tradition for accepting culture as a superorganic entity, preoccupied with cultural artifacts, while not exploring the theoretically informed explanation of the mechanisms behind the morphology of cultural landscapes. Now 'new cultural' geographers view landscape as text and 'a way of seeing'. Among the various contemporary cultural geographic research trends, the topics briefly discussed in this paper are landscape as text, landscape as iconography, palimpsest in landscape, soundscape, self and other, social construction of race and nature, vernacular gardens, literary geography and filmscape. This paper concludes that the traditional Berkeley style cultural geography is closely associated with historical geography, while the new cultural geography is most closely related to social geography.
