경관연구의 환경론적 함의

국문 초록

본 논문은 문화지리학의 경관연구가 현대의 환경담론 및 환경운동에 대해 어떠한 함의를 갖고 있는가를 논의한다. 특히, 지리학의 경관이론과 현대 환경주의의 역사적, 개념적 관계를 설명하기 위해, 19세기 이후 낭만주의적 경관관념의 형성과 변형에 초점을 둔다. 현대 주류 환경주의는 인간의 문화적 실천과 자연환경(경관)을 분리하고, 자연을 인간의 외부에 존재하는 것으로 가정하는 ‘자연-문화’ 이분법에서 자유롭지 못하며 이러한 경향은 낭만주의적 경관전통에 기인한다. 이러한 낭만주의적 환경론은 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 축적되어온 인간문화의 지층으로서 경관에 접근함을 통해서 극복할 수 있다. 사우어의 문화생태학적 관점과 신문화지리학의 경관연구는, 방법론에서의 큰 차이에도 불구하고, 자연에 대한 물질적·의식적 개입을 통해 자연환경을 변화시키는 인간-거주자의 능동적 역할을 고려함으로써, 자연경관에 남겨진 문화의 흔적을 ‘인간-환경’관계의 통일적 인식을 위한 긍정적 연결고리로 이해할 수 있게 한다.

영문 초록

This paper explores what implications landscape studies have on modern environmental discourse and practice. Especially, to elucidate historical and conceptual relations between landscape theories and modern environmentalism, the focus is on the evolution and transformation of romantic landscape concept since 19th century. Main stream environmentalism in modern society is subject to 'nature-culture' dualism assuming that nature exists outside human culture, which is originated from romantic landscape tradition. The romantic environmentalism can be challenged by the landscape concepts as geological layers of human culture accumulated historically. Landscape studies in cultural geography can make it possible to render the vestiges of culture inscribed in natural landscape as a celebrating link for interactive understanding of human-environment relationship, by considering the active role of human inhabitants in intervening in and transforming nature.
