종교의 장소성

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 일제강점기를 중심으로 종교별 장소성을 이해하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 전주와 같은 전통 도시와 목포나 군산 등 개항도시를 비교해 살펴보았다. 종교 장소성에 작용하는 장소 관성, 장소 전용, 장소 권력, 장소 응집성 등의 지리적 현상들을 적용하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 전주에서는 민족별 거지주가 발달되지 않아서 승암산과 완산칠봉의 구릉이 종교들의 중심이었다면, 목포와 군산은 민족별 거주지에 따라 종교들의 분포가 달랐다. 그리스도교는 조선인 거주지에, 일본신사는 일본인 거주지의 구릉을 선호하였던 반면, 일본불교는 조선인과 일본인 주거지의 사이에 사찰을 세웠다. 둘째, 구릉지향성이 가장 두드러진 종교는 일본신도와 그리스도교였다. 신도는 식민지 지배를 위한 감시 장치로서의 정치적 장소성이 강하였다면, 그리스도교는 유럽의 종교적 전통을 계승한 것이다. 이러한 구릉지향성은 다른 종교들에도 영향을 주었다.

영문 초록

This article examines the placeness of religions centering around the period of Japanese Imperialism. And the placeness of religions is examined by the four measures: the inertia of place, appropriation of place, power of place, and cohesion of place. For this, I suggest the case of Jeonju by a traditional city, and the cases of Kunsan and Mokpo by the cities that opened their ports to Japan. As a result, first, in Jeonju the center of the religions was located on the Seungam Mt. and Wansan Mt. because the ethnic residential district was not developed well, but in Kunsan and Mokpo, the distribution of the religions was different according to the ethnic residential district. That is, Christianity located its missionary stations on the hills near Korean residential district, Japanese Buddhism located its temples on the hills between the Korean residential district and the Japanese concession, and Shintoism also located its shrines on the hills that they could command a fine view of Korean and Japanese residential district. Second, Christianity and Shintoism especially preferred the hills for their landscapes. This was especially influenced by the cohesion of place because the hills were advantageous for Kerigma or supervision etc. This hill orientation influenced other religions.
