정약용의 귀신론

국문 초록

정약용은 『중용『』 『귀신장』 에 대해 새로운 해석을 제시함으로써 귀신론을 새로운 철학적 주제로 부각시켰다. 그에 의하면, 귀신은 리(理)나 기(氣)가 아니며, 일반 사물들과 달리 형질을 가지지 않는 초월적 실체이다. 귀신 가운데 지극히 존귀한 것은 상제인데, 상제는 항상 사람들의 마음과 행위를 감시하고 있는 존재이다. 이와 같은 해석은 당시 『천주실의』 를 통해 유입된 천주교로부터 일정한 영향을 받은 것으로 생각된다. 또한 정약용은 존재론적 귀신론에 입각하여 인간을 “귀신과 형체의 신묘한 결합”으로 설명함으로써 마음과 본성을 재해석하였다. 이것은 사변적 이론 지향의 지각론적 경향에서 탈피하여 실천 지향적인 마음 개념을 새롭게 정립하기 위한 것이었다.

영문 초록

Chung Yag-yong emphasized the theme of ghosts and spirits (gui-shin) by presenting the new interpretation about the chapter of gui-shin in The Doctrine of the Mean (中庸). According to his view, ghosts and spirits are neither li (理) nor ki (氣), but they are the transcendent substance with no material form. The highest and noblest one among these ghosts and spirits is the sang-je (上帝), who is watching every people's minds and behaviors all the time. The interpretation of gui-shin like this was to some extent influenced by the Catholicism that had flowed in Korea through Matteo Ricci's Cheonjusilyi (天主實義) at that time. Also he reinterpreted the mind and nature by explaining a human being as “the mysterious union of spiritual ghost and physical form”, based on his theory of ghosts and spirits. His reinterpretation was devised to set up the practice-oriented mind getting out of theory-oriented epistemology i.e. the theory of chih-chüeh (知覺).
