陵參奉職 수행을 통해 본 頤齋 黃胤錫의 仕宦의식

국문 초록

  18세기 향촌 지식인 頤齋 黃胤錫은 매우 박학다식한 인물로 총 57책의 방대한 自筆日記 『頤齋亂藁』를 남겼다. 53년(1738～1791) 동안 지속적으로 自敍한 이 일기 속에는 저자가 應科와 赴直을 목적으로 上京한 총 22차례의 한양기행 기록이 들어 있다. 그 중 9차～12차는 황윤석이 38세로 莊陵參奉職에 蔭補 출사하여 莊陵과 고향 全羅道 興德縣 및 한양을 왕래했던 부임 기록이다. 本考는 그가 처음 관직에 나아가던 이 시점의 일기를 중심으로 벼슬살이에 대한 그의 생각과 고민들을 살펴보고자 한다.
  황윤석은 여느 선비들처럼 과거 급제를 통해 중앙 조정에 진출하기를 희망했는데, 전라도 출신이라는 지역적 한계와 변변치 못한 집안 배경 때문에 더더욱 擧業에 대한 열망이 강렬하였다. 하지만 24세 때부터 여러 차례 과거에 응시했지만 번번이 실패하고, 38세가 되어서야 비로소 蔭補로 莊陵參奉에 初入仕하게 된다.
  그런데 황윤석에게는 이 一命을 흔쾌히 받아들일 수 없는 점이 몇 가지 있었다. 우선은 과거 급제를 통한 仕宦이 아니었기도 했고, 또 父親이 고매한 學德에도 불구하고 아직 遺賢으로 남아 있는데 자신이 먼저 南行으로 출사하는 것도 未便한 일이었다. 더구나 老論인 자신과 黨色이 다른 少論의 鄭景淳이 자신을 추천했다는 사실은 특히 더 마음에 걸림돌이 되었다. 황윤석은 본디 당색에 얽매이는 인물은 아니었지만, 소론의 추천을 받은 일로 스승 金元行에게 의심을 받고 걱정을 듣는 등 오해의 소지가 다분했기 때문이다.
  이런 상황에서 頤齋에게는 그의 음보 진출이 吏判의 族弟인 정경순 때문이 아니라 오로지 자신의 名望에 의한 ‘公論’에서 비롯되었다는 명분이 무엇보다도 중요하였다. 그래서 황윤석은 장릉참봉 시기의 일기에서 자신의 참봉직 제수가 당색을 떠나 公論에 의한 것이었음을 누누이 강조하곤 하였다. 덧붙여 父親의 一命을 知人들에게 부탁하고 다닐 때도 언제나 ‘公論’을 입에 외고 다녔다. 황윤석에게 公論은 참으로 매력적이고 소중한 의지처였던 것이다.
  강원도 영월의 端宗 묘소 장릉은 고향이나 한양에서 너무 멀었지만, 侍下의 황윤석은 어버이를 봉양할 경제적 여유를 얻기 위해 고을 수령을 목표로 결국 참봉직을 수락하고 영월로 부임하였다. 그는 참봉으로 근무하면서 장릉에 대한 寧越府의 침학에 맞서는 등 규범을 따르려는 원칙주의를 견지하였다. 소망하던 과거를 통한 벼슬살이는 아니었지만, 出六하여 수령직을 맡는 것이 목적이었지만, 황윤석은 장릉참봉으로서의 직임을 최대한 성실히 수행하였다.

영문 초록

  Hwang Yoonseok(1729～1791) is a remarkable local intellectual, who was a well-informed Silhakja,(實學者) with broad vision in the later Chosun. He had recorded diaries with his own hands during fifty three years between 1738 and 1791. These diaries in 57 volumes were named Ijaenango( 頤齋亂藁). This article is to explore his reflections on an official career by means of diaries which he recorded at the time when he had firstly held a public position in 38 years-old.
  Like other Seonbis(선비), Hwang Yoonseok desired the entry into the royal court by passing Gwageo(科擧). However, he had a more intense desire for Gwageo, as he was from Jeonra-do(全羅道) and an ungainly family. He had applied for Gwageo several times and failed to pass it as many times. Finally, he did not commenced an official career until 38 years-old when he had been appointed as Chambong of Jangreung by Eumbo(蔭補).
  But his appointment by Eumbo owed to the positive recommendation of Jeong Kyeongsoon(鄭景淳) who was in Soron(少論), while he was a member of Noron(老論), and so it seemed feel uncomfortable to him. Though he did not originally bear in mind partisanship, there was much room for misunder- standing by which his master Kim Wonhaeng(金元行) was concerned about the fact that he had been recommended by Soron. Thus, he frequently stressed that his appointment by Eumbo had corresponded with the public opinion(公論) irrespective of partisanship. The public opinion was a determinant and key criterion which was splendly eloquent of his own attitude.
  Hwang Yoonseok contined to apply for Gwageo after his appointment to Chambong because he had long taken aim at the advance into the central key position by Gwageo. However, he perfomed continually Chambong position, a pretty office of nineth Poom(品), at Youngweol(寧越) of Kwangwon-do(江原道) where was far from Seoul or his home town. Because he wished to be promoted to the chief of province by completing the certain term of duty as soon as possible. If he became the chief of province, he could afford to support his old aged parents. So, his friends and companions had positively asked him to take charge of Cambong position.
  Doing his duty at Jangreung, Hwang Yoonseok adhered to the principle that he only behaved according to the defined provisions. In particular, this aspect is revealed apparently by his effort that resisted against Youngweol-Bu(寧越府)"s interference with Jangreung. Though he did not pass Gwageo and his goal was the appointment as the chief of province, he was the sincerest official in conducting Chambong position of Jangreung.
