국문 초록

  본 연구는 김호직이 쓴 『동천자』를 중심으로 그 기술방향과 의의에 대하여 탐구한 것이다. 김호직은 한말과 일제강점기를 살았던 인물이니, 우리 민족 최대의 격변기를 살았다고 할 수 있다. 그는 이 격변기에 그의 숙부와 함께 의병활동을 전개하였으며, 국토산하를 다양하게 편력하면서 역사유적에 대한 새로운 인식을 하기도 하고, 조선의 도읍지 한양을 가사체로 작품화하기도 했다. 김호직의 이와 같은 활동은 그의 나라사랑의 발로였음은 물론이다. 이와 같은 작가 내적 조건도 있었지만 『동천자』는 당대의 특수한 시대적 배경에서 저술되었다. 즉 주흥사『천자문』의 활발한 교육, 일제강점기라는 민족적 현실, 그리고 주흥사『천자문』에 일정한 문제를 제기하면서 저술된 다양한 東千字類 등이 그것이다. 이와 같은 시대적 배경과 작가의 애국정신이 맞물리면서 『동천자』는 빛을 보게 되었던 것이다.   그렇다면 『동천자』의 기술방향은 크게 넷으로 나누어진다. 첫째, 왕조 중심적 기술을 들 수 있다. 김호직은 이로써 우리의 역사가 중국의 그것과 같이 시작한다고 하면서, 유구하면서도 찬란한 역사를 식민지 시대의 아동들에게 인식시키면서 역사의식을 제고하고자 했던 것이다. 둘째, 절의정신의 고취를 들 수 있다. 김호직은 『동천자』의 요소요소에 절의를 지킨 사람들을 열거하며 그 공적을 높였다. 여기에는 물론 나라가 망했더라도 절의정신이 살아있으면 언제라도 광복할 수 있다는 그의 신념이 담겨져 있다. 셋째, 남인의 입장 대변을 들 수 있다. 그의 가계와 학맥은 퇴계학파와 닿아 있다. 『동천자』에서 이를 적극적으로 제시한 것은 김호직 스스로가 영남 남인의 맥을 튼실히 잇고 있으며 그 정통성 역시 여기에 두고 싶었기 때문일 터이다. 넷째, 야사의 적극적 수용을 들 수 있다. 이는 초학자들이 한문과 역사에 대하여 자칫 흥미를 잃기가 쉬우므로 재미있는 이야기를 적극적으로 수용하여 공부의 동기를 유발시키고자 하는 의도가 숨어있는 것이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

  This study was to examine the description and meaning of 〈Dongcheonja〉 written by Kim Ho-jik, who lived in the end of Choseon Dynasty and the Japanese occupation period. He can be regarded as a person who lived in the period when our people underwent the most sudden change. During the period, he participated in patriotic army with his uncle. At the same time, he newly recognized historical remains and wrote verses about Hanyang, the capital city of Choseon, as a type of Gasa(歌詞), an old form of Korean verse, traveling widely throughout the country. Of course, these activities were an expression of his patriotism. Affected by the author"s inner condition, 〈Dongcheonja〉 was written under a special background of the age. For example, 〈Cheonjamoon〉 written by Zhou Xiansi was educated actively, people suffered under the Japanese occupation, and various kinds of Dongcheonja were written raising particular problems of 〈Cheonjamoon〉 by Zhuo Xiansi. Such a background going in gear with the author"s patriotism, 〈Dongcheonja〉 was written.   Then, how can the description of 〈Dongcheonja〉 be explained? This is divided into 4 directions largely. First, its description is dynasty-centered. Saying our history began with that of China, Kim Ho-jik intended to raise the historical consciousness by helping children in the colonial age to recognize our eternal and brilliant history. Second, its description inspired a spirit of fidelity. Kim Ho-jik enumerated those who kept fidelity on various contents of 〈Dongcheonja〉 and raised their contribution. This description contained his belief that even if a country perishes, we can regain independence some day if the spirit of fidelity is alive. Third, he spoke for the stance of Southerners. His lineage and academic thread had contacts with Tuigae school. He presented its stance positively in 〈Dongcheonja〉. That may because he succeeded to the thread of Southerners and wanted to place the legitimacy on this respect. Fourth, he accepted unofficial histories. As beginning scholars were likely to lose interest in Chinese writing and history, he might intend to motivate them to study by accepting interesting histories actively.
