국문 초록

이 논문은 특정 집단이 겪은 과거의 트라우마를 다수의 대중에게 공감이 가도록 전시하는 추모 박물관에 대해 논의한다. 추모 박물관의 전시 분석에만 제한적으로 머물러 있는 지금까지의 관점과는 달리, 본 연구는 전시 내용의 공감 능력을 증폭시키기 위해 이뤄지는 전시의 일반화(generalization) 과정에서 발생하는 상실이라는 현상에 주목한다. 따라서 본 논문은 현재의 박물관 연구에서 간과된 두 가지 요소인 박물관이 속한 사회와 방문객의 경험으로 토론의 범위를 확장함으로써 반복적으로 사용되고 있는 일반적(generalized)이고 초월적인 추모 박물관의 관습적인 전시형태가 초래할 수 있는 부정적인 현상에 대해 논한다. 구체적인 논의를 위해 미국 워싱턴 디시의 홀로코스트 박물관(United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)과 칠레 산티아고에 있는 칠레 인권박물관(Museum of Memory and Human Rights)의 사례가 소개되며, 추모 박물관 연구와 전시 방식에 새로운 방향성이 요구됨을 제기한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates how memorial museums utilize generalization and relatability to introduce an atrocity, which was experienced by a specific group of people, to the general public. Moreover, this research argues whether generalization and relatibility inadvertently cause any harm or trigger misconception about the past. By examining the consequences of these elements(generalization and relatibility) in memorial museums’ exhibit, this research points out what can be lost or misrepresented along the process. Consequently, this study departs from the limited scope of current museum studies, which overwhelmingly rests its focus on analyzing visual representations, hence expands the discussion to society, in which museums inhibit, and visitors’ experience. Thus, by inviting two new aspects(society and visitor), which have been overlooked and excluded in the exiting research, to the discussion, this study attempts to approach and understand memorial museums in a new light. Therefore, through the cases of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile, this study offers an alternative view and new direction on inspecting memorial museums.
