국문 초록

인류의 문화유산을 보전하면서 사회 발전에 기여해온 박물관은 오늘날에는 보다 능동적으로 사회의 정치적․사회적․문화적 현실에 참여함으로써 공공기관으로서의 역할을 더욱 공고히 하고 있다. 정보통신 기술의 발달로 인한 세계화의 가속은 대중의 문화다양성에 대한 관심을 높아지게 했으며, 박물관은 대중의 이러한 문화적 욕구를 충족시키기 위해 서비스의 질을 향상해왔다. 이에 국제박물관협의회는 ‘박물관은 문화교류, 문화강화 및 사람들 간의 상호 이해, 협력 및 평화 증진의 중요한 수단’이라고 선언하고 있다. 박물관은 18세기 대중에게 문을 개방한 이후로, 점진적으로 대중과의 접근성을 높이며 지위ㆍ계급ㆍ문화배경ㆍ사회경제적 배경ㆍ생활양식과 상관없이 누구에게나 공평한 문화 향유의 기회를 제공하기 위해 노력해 왔다. 수준 높은 문화예술에 대한 접근성을 증대시킬 뿐만 아니라 더 나아가 일반 대중의 문화생산 참여에도 관심을 갖게 되었다. 궁극적으로 문화민주화와 문화민주주의는 관람객의 계층을 확장하고 소장품의 디지털화를 통해 접근성을 무한대로 확장하고, 그들에게 창조적이고 자발적인 참여와 문화활동을 독려한다고 해서만 이루어지는 것이 아니라, 공동체의 관여와 협업으로 한 발자국 더 나아가게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Museums which have contributed to the development of society while holding cultural heritage of mankind are now proactively involving in the political, economic and cultural realities of communities, thereby consolidating their roles as a public institution. As the interest in cultural diversity is increasing more than ever as globalization through the Internet accelerates, in particular, the International Council of Museums(ICOM) has now stated, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.” Since opening to the public in the 18th century, museums have gradually expanded access and engagement to all people, regardless of their status, class, cultural background, socio-economic background and lifestyle according to social changes. Not only have museums increased the access to quality culture and arts, but they have also been interested in the participation of the general public in cultural production. Ultimately, democratization of culture and cultural democracy in museums are not achieved only by expanding the class of visitors, increasing accessibility through digitalization of the collections and encouraging creative and spontaneous participation and cultural activities. Museums can take one step further toward cultural democracy when communities are invited to the museum work for their engagement and collaboration.
