국문 초록

본 연구는 베네딕트의「국화와 검」을 도덕교육의 관점에서 해석한 것이다. ‘균형’이라는 개념은 일본인의 도덕관을 이해하는 데에 결정적으로 중요하다. 이 균형은 삶에 관한 일본인의 깊은 통찰을 반영하고 있다. 일본인에게 있어서 삶은 딜레마로 가득 찬 ‘난국’으로 파악된다. 도덕적 삶은 그 난국의 ‘한 가운데’로 들어가 그 딜레마를 있는 그대로 온몸으로 느끼고 그것을 가시화한다. 의무체계들의 딜레마에서 균형을 유지하려는 개인의 주체적인 노력에 의하여, 인간의 삶은 한 가지 관점으로 결코 파악될 수 없는, 복잡한 ‘총체’라는 것이 확립된다. 이와 같은 일본인들의 도덕관은 도덕에 관한 오늘날 우리의 통념의 한계를 드러내는 데 결정적으로 중요한 역할을 하며, 이러한 통념에 대한 대안으로서 ‘도덕인식론’이라는 새로운 인식론의 성립 가능성을 시사한다. 도덕인식론은, 도덕인식은 인식일반과 동일평면상의 인식이 아니라 인식일반이 심성함양의 통로가 된다는 것을 자신의 실천으로 확립하는 실천인식임을 밝히는 인식론이다.

영문 초록

This study is an attempt to interpret The Chrysanthemum and the Sword from the viewpoint of moral education. It sums up the Japanese behavior patterns which are mentioned in The Chrysanthemum and the Sword, and reveals the Japanese thought on the moral education and concept of morality which lies behind them. Then the common idea of moral education to be generally accepted in our society should be reviewed as mistaken. From the viewpoint of Japanese thought, it should be suggested the alternative idea to common idea, i. e. moral epistemology. According to Japanese thought, the purpose of moral education is to be put into the dilemma of virtues, and is to balance among virtues. The balance is too important in understanding Japanese thought on moral life, the balance which shows the deep insight of life as predicament . The moral life might be established as a whole by the ons s constant, despairing, spontaneous effort to balance among virtues in the midst of predicament. Then the knowledge is to be called moral knowledge as practice , in contrast with moral knowledge as guide and moral knowledge as theory implied in common idea. This knowledge is to be regarded as the practical knowledge that efforts to establish by ons s practice that the knowledge general is a way of cultivation of Mind.
