국문 초록

「국가론」에서의 정의에 관한 소크라테스의 탐구는 관례적 정의의 차원을 넘어서 정의 그 자체, 즉 정의의 이데아로 나아가는 방향을 취한다. 소크라테스의 입을 빌어 소개되는 플라톤의 이데아론은 삶의 의미와 가치를 설명하는 이론으로서, 정의가 삶의 가변적 외양이 아니라 그 불변적 실재를 나타낸다는 것, 그리고 올바른 삶은 삶의 의미로서의 정의를 실현하는 삶이라는 것을 보여준다. 「국가론」의 대화는 영혼과 국가의 정의를 실현하는 교육 실천과의 관련을 떠나서 순전히 형이상학적 사변에 의하여 정의의 의미를 밝히는 것이 아니라, 사람들을 올바른 삶으로 이끄는 교육과의 긴밀한 관련 속에서 그 대화 자체가 독자의 삶을 정의롭게 만드는 방식으로 전개된다고 말할 수 있다. 거기서 대화의 형식으로 이루어지는 정의의 의미에 관한 플라톤의 논의는 정의를 실현하는 교육의 실천을 통하여 삶과 교육을 ‘정당한 것’으로 만들어가는 본래적 의미의 정당화를 예시한다.

영문 초록

In Plato s Republic, Socrates contradicts both of the two conceptions of justice: justice in its conventional sense represented by the phrase of the to tell the truth and to repay what one has borrowed and justice in its natural sense represented by the interest of the stronger . In Socrates s alternative view, justice consists in the well-ordered state of soul and society, which transcends the horizon of human desire or interest. Socrates pursues the idea of justice to its true sense. Plato s theory of Idea implies that justice refers to the form of life which is to be constituted by the unchangeable reality behind the unstable changing world of appearance. For Plato, the superb way of understanding the idea of justice is to follow up the process of education for the philosopher-kings whose beings embody it by coming close to the knowledge of Good itself, the Idea of the Good. Unlike the metaphysical speculation on what the Idea of the Good is, Plato s authorship makes it possible for the dialogue in his Republic to function as a metapractical discourse for leading people to just life by providing opportunities to participate in the process of educational practice. The dialogue on justice can be interpreted as an alternative form of justification in the sense that it can make just the lives of those who reads it by showing how the just people has been cultivated through the educational program for the philosopher-kings, which is not different in its nature from the school subjects of nowadays. It means that the readers need the perspective of educational ethics based on the metapractical theory of education.
