국문 초록

키에르케고르의 사상에 비추어 볼 때 탕자 이야기는 인간 형성의 가능성과 지향점을 심오한 수준에서 보여주는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 키에르케고르는 인간의 실존에 대한 경험과 통찰을 바탕으로 인간이 신과의 관계로 나아가는 과정을 여실하게 그려내는 저작들을 써 내고, 그것을 통하여 독자를 신과의 관계라는 인간 형성의 최종 국면으로 이끌려고 하였다. 이 점에서, 그의 저작과 삶은 탕자 이야기의 모범적인 해석을 예시한다. 그 해석에 의하면, 신인 동시에 인간이라는, 그 이야기 저자의 파라독스적 존재는 독자를 신과의 관계로 이끌려는 교육적 의도에서 비롯된 것으로서, 독자를 신과의 완전한 관계, 즉 신앙으로 이끄는 간접전달의 조건이 된다. 이 파라독스와 대면은 개인이 상심과 신앙 중 어느 쪽으로든 나아가지 않을 수 없는 상태, 즉 상심의 가능성에 놓이게 된다는 것을 뜻하며, 이 점에서 간접전달은 상심의 가능성을 겨냥한다고 말할 수 있다. 신과의 관계는 생명에 상응할 만큼 가치가 크며, 따라서 그것의 회복에는 ‘공포와 전율’이 수반되지 않을 수 없다. 인간 형성의 가치는 그것에 수반되는 ‘공포와 전율’의 강도에 비례한다.

영문 초록

The Parable of the Prodigal Son shows that God wills to forgive the sinned people and give the chance to recover their relation to Him. Man, as God s prodigal son, is destined to rewrite the parable into his own story of life. In this regard, Kierkegaard s interpretation of the parable can serve as an worthwhile example for us to follow, in that he lived as a prodigal son for a while in his young time, translated that experience into a vivid story of human-becoming and exercised a most brilliant authorship which was designed for suggesting a way of the return home and for leading his readers to restore their relation to God. For Kierkegaard, Jesus can be seen as the teacher who helps the learners relate to God. Jesus s paradoxical being as both God and man was to be required in order to practice the most perfect form of ‘indirect communication’. The paradox permits no rational understanding and arouses inevitably the ‘possibility of offence’, which functions as some repellent force to lift us up to faith. Indirect communication, as a method needed for leading us to the possibility of offence, consists in the core of practice for having the human self ‘grounded transparently’ in God. Kierkegaard s idea of indirect communication presupposes that our relation to God does not dispense with the most expensive cost of one’s own life. The psychological response to that cost is the ‘fear and trembling’ by virtue of which Abraham can be respected as ‘the father of faith’. The value of human-becoming depends simply and solely on the magnitude of the fear and trembling.
