국문 초록

이 연구는 ‘인문주의’라는 용어와 그것이 추구하는 이상을 고전주의적 맥락을 참조하여 교육사상사적 관점에서 탐구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구는 먼저 우리말 ‘인문주의’의 원어에 해당하는 서양어 ‘휴머니즘’이 언제, 누구에 의해, 어떤 맥락에서 사용되기 시작했는지, 그리고 한자어 우리말 ‘인문주의’는 또 어떤 과정을 통해서 ‘휴머니즘’의 번역어로 쓰이게 되었는지에 대한 논의로부터 시작한다. 인문주의라는 역사학적 개념은 원래 14세기 이후 르네상스 시대 유럽의 이념을 가리키기 위한 것이었지만, 그 내용들은 사실 고대 헬라스 시대와 헬레니즘 시대, 그리고 공화정 말기 고대 로마 시대를 포함해야 제대로 이해될 수 있다. 연구자는 특히 기원전 1세기 로마 학자 키케로가 ‘후마니타스’라는 말을 사용할 때 지녔던 문제의식에 주목하고 그것을 토대로 인문주의와 인문학의 이념이 형성되고 전개되는 과정을 추적한다.

영문 초록

This study aims at discussing historically the concept of ‘Humanism’, its ideals and the etymological origin, in the classical context. The study begins from investigating the term ‘humanism’ itself or its German term ‘humanismus’, with the issues of who began to use it, when and in what context it began to be used. The author also discusses the Korean translation of the word by referring to the Chinese classical text, Iching―The Book of Changes. The word ‘humanism’ was for the first time used by German scholars in order to point the Renaissance Italy, and yet it cannot be fully understood until we go back as far as to the 5th-4th century BC Ancient Greece, the Hellenistic era, and the first century BC Ancient Rome. The study puts special focus on the Sophists and Socrates because they were the main figures who transferred the themes of philosophical investigations from natural world to ‘human life’ which the author regards as the root of humanism. Also is Cicero a specially important figure in that he was the successor of Socrates in viewing the main purpose of academic study as living the human life well, and the main purpose of education as growing excellent orators.
