남홍의 종합 예술에 나타난 치유의 미학

국문 초록

본 연구는 회화와 설치, 퍼포먼스(performance)와 음악이 결합된 종합 예술을 보여주고 있는 재불 미술가 남홍의 작품 세계를 분석함으로써 그 국제적인 위상과 평가에 비해 국내에서는 학술적 연구가 이루어지지 않은 한국 여성 미술가의 미학적 의의와 가치를 고찰하였다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 미술이 다양한 장르적 표현에서 치유의 효과를 가져와 내적 변화와 성장, 재 활을 이끌어내는 중요한 통로임을 구체적으로 증명하고 그 의의를 탐구하는 것을 최종 목표 로 한다. 남홍은 자신의 전(全) 작업에서 만물의 탄생과 소멸, 재생과 부활이라는 주제를 보 여준다. 그녀는 삶과 죽음, 만남과 이별, 소멸과 부활처럼 이분법적인 대립항으로 여겨지는 모든 것들이 서로 조화롭게 연결된다고 믿으며 이들이 평화롭게 공존할 때에 인간 삶의 상처 가 아물 수 있다고 주장한다. 그리고 이를 증명하기 위해 세계 속 존재들의 상처와 슬픔을 어루만지고 희망과 기쁨을 전파한다. 치유를 위한 소통과 감정 이입을 위해 남홍은 소지(燒 紙), 굿과 같은 전통적 종교 행위들뿐만 아니라 패션 디자인, 대중가요까지 활용한다. 남홍의 작품에 등장하는 꽃과 나비, 불 등은 생명의 에너지와 부활의 기쁨을 전달하고 삶과 죽음을 평화롭게 융합시키는 상징물로 기능한다. 궁극적으로 남홍의 예술적 행위들은 내면의 상처를 분출시키고 공유하게 만들어 작가 자신뿐만 아니라 그녀의 작업을 마주하는 사람들의 상처까 지 치유하여 재생으로 이끌고 심리적 균형을 되찾아준다. 따라서 남홍의 종합 예술에 참여하 는 사람들은 일상 속에서 겪게 되는 갈등과 문제들을 극복해나갈 수 있는 원동력을 갖게 된 다. 본 연구를 통해 미술 활동이 예술가와 관람자 모두의 마음과 정신, 그리고 신체적 갈등과 상처를 극복해 나갈 수 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the aesthetic significance and value provided by a Korean female artist, a subject rarely studied in South Korea considering their international status and reputation, by analyzing art of Nam Hong, a Paris-based Korean artist who combines painting, installation, performance, and music. Also, based on the analysis, the study demonstrated that art provides an important channel through which people can internally change, grow, and heal and examined significance of such effects. Throughout her works, Nam Hong expresses birth and demise, and reincarnation and resurrection of life. She believes contradictory concepts like life and death, meeting and parting, and demise and resurrection are harmoniously connected to each other, and that, when these concepts coexist peacefully, the wounds of life can be healed. To show this idea, she spreads hope and joy while caressing wounds and sadness of everything in the world in her works. For such purpose, Nam Hong adopts both traditional religious ceremonies like Soji(燒紙) and gut, and pop music written for the public audience. All of these are aimed to communicate healing. Also, flowers, butterflies, and fire that appear in her works symbolize energy of life and joy of resurrection. Ultimately, artistic actions of Nam Hong help express and share internal pain to heal the wounds of both the artist and audience and restore psychological balance. Therefore, audiences who participate in the composite art of Nam Hong, in the end, find the power to overcome conflicts and problems in their day-to-day life. This study found that through art, both artists and audience can heal their mind and overcome conflicts and pain.
