본 논문은 마가렛 캐빈디시의 초기작으로 분류되는 『사교 서신 모음집』(Sociable Letters)과 『쾌락의 수도원』(The Convent of Pleasure)을 나란히 놓고, 17세기 영국 (귀족) 여성들이 내면성을 획득해가는 여러 시도를 추적한다. 여기에서 내면성이란 당대 여성들에게 기대되는 사회적 수행성이나 가장 여성적인 쾌락 추구로 여겨지는 것들와 물리적, 심리적으로 거리를 둔 공간에서만 획득 가능한 주체적 사고, 자기결정권, 지적 활동 등으로 이해할 수 있다. 『쾌락의 수도원』에서 저자 캐빈디시는 여성들만의 주체성을 실험하고, 내면성을 획득하기 위한 필수조건으로 풍성하고 화려한 물질적 조건들을 제시하고 있다. 이를 통해 저자는 여성들이 지적, 심리적, 정서적 내면성을 얻기 위해 이들에게 반드시 건축적/공간적 개념의 ‘안’이 주어져야 함을 역설한다고 해석 된다. 『쾌락의 수도원』의 결말이 결국 이성애 결혼으로 봉합되고, 여성들만의 학제 기관으로 그려진 수도원이 내파되는 것으로 끝나는 것은 문제적이라 하겠다. 그러나 이러한 결말에도 불구하고, 『쾌락의 수도원』 내에서 캐빈디시가 실험한 내면성은 추후 18세기 전반에 소설이라는 장르에서 이뤄지는 내면성 연구의 시발점이 된다는 점에서 문학사적 의의가 있다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This essay juxtaposes Margaret Cavendish’s two early works Sociable Letters (1664) and The Convent of Pleasure (1668) in an effort to illustrate how the seventeenth-century woman writer attested to the possibility of achieving interiority in and outside of printed texts. In conversation with the recent literary scholarship focusing on the construction of interiority and inwardness in long eighteenth-century texts, including Jonathan Kramnick, Julie Park, and Sean Silver, I seek to illustrate the ways Cavendish toyed with the idea of interiority. Stakes of this essay are many: primarily, the intersections of spatial and cognitive interiority as depicted in Cavendish’s works show that the author anticipated the rise of the novel, whose sustained interest in the particular and the material gives rise to a subject’s inwardness. Second, by creating a springboard for unfolding all-female space, Cavendish suggests an alternative to a woman’s way of living. The pastoral closure, one that is akin to the marriage closure in Shakespeare’s comedy, can be seen as disintegrating the hard-won establishment of the women’s closet. And yet, I argue that what Cavendish believed to be pleasure is firmly rooted in the convent or a closet, where women can retire from distractions and censorship so that they can acquire time for contemplation fundamental to self-sufficiency and self-governance.
