세계문학의 생태학: 알렉산더 비크로프트의 이론을 중심으로

국문 초록

오늘날 세계문학 논의에서 가장 중요한 이슈는 세계어로서의 영어의 과잉 중심성과 세계문학 시장의 과도한 상업화 경향에 맞서 세계문학의 생태계를 어떻게 다양화할 수 있는가 하는 문제이다. 이는 세계문학을 시장 중심의 경제학적 관점에서 볼 것인가, 아니면 세계문학을 다양성이라는 생태학적 관점에서 볼 것인가 하는 문제를 제기한다. 기존의 세계문학 이론가들은 근대세계체제와 지구화의 과정 속에서 문학의 초국적 이동과 번역이나 서구적 형식과 지역적 제재 간의 타협 과정에 주목함으로써 세계문학을 경제적이고 체계적인 관점에서 설명해왔다. 세계문학의 형성에서 문학을 중심과 주변, 제국과 식민, 민족과 지역 사이에서 일어나는 문화적 타협과 번역의 과정으로 이해하다보니 그런 과정에 의해 설명되지 않는 세계문학의 존재들은 배제되는 경우가 종종 있다. 최근 들어 타협, 교섭, 번역과 같은 이론에 기대지 않으면서 문학의 형태론적 유사성을 설명하려고 하는 세계문학의 이론들이 눈에 띈다. 알렉산더 비크로프트는 세계문학의 역사적 진화 과정에서 문학형태의 유사성을 탐구하는 통역사적인 모델을 제안하고 특히 이를 통해 세계문학의 생태학을 강조한다. 그는 고대에서 현재에 이르기까지 세계문학의 다양한 양식들을 통해 세계문학의 생태계를 설명하고자 한다. 이 글에서는 비크로프트의 이런 주장을 비판적으로 검토하고 그의 세계문학의 생태학이 사실 세계체제의 사회적 구성과 경제적 교환 양식에 근거하고 있음을 지적하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The most important issue in the discussion of world literature today is whether it is possible to diversify the ecosystems of world literature against the hypercentrality of English as the world language and the overcommercialization of the world literature. This can be posed as the question of whether world literature should be viewed from a market-oriented economic perspective or an ecological perspective of diversity. Many world literature theorists, such as Pascale Casanova and Franco Moretti, have explained world literature from an economic and systemic perspective by focusing on the transnational movement of literature in the modern world system and the process of compromise between western literature and non-western literature. Understanding the formation of world literature as a process of cultural compromise and translation between center and periphery has often bypassed the existence of many world literatures that cannot be accounted for by such processes. In recent years, theories of world literature have emerged that attempt to explain typological similarities in literature without relying on concepts of compromise, negotiation, and translation. Alexander Beecroft proposes an alternative model that explores the similarities of literary types in the historical evolution of world literature and emphasizes the ecology of world literature. He seeks to explain the ecology of world literature through the various types of world literature from antiquity to the present. This paper will critically examine Beecroft’s argument and point out that his ecology of world literature is based on the modes of economic exchange of the world system.
