국문 초록

본 논문은 맷 헤이그의 판타지 소설 『자정의 도서관』(2020)을 사례로 삼아 신자유주의 생명정치 체체에서 나타나는 성장의 의미를 연구한다. 보다 역사적으로 타당성 있는 연구를 수행하기 위해, 본 연구는 우선 『자정의 도서관』을 전통적 성장소설과 비교한다. 전통적 성장소설은 일반적으로 주인공이 공동체의 규범을 자발적으로 내면화하는 사회화 과정을 묘사함으로써, 근대적 개인과 민족 문화가 유기적으로 조화를 이루는 근대적 이상을 표현한다. 『자정의 도서관』은 서른다섯 살의 영국 여성 노라가 자신의 삶에 절망하여 자살을 기도하지만 “자정의 도서관”에 도착하여 그녀가 살았을 수도 있는 수많은 삶을 경험하는 이야기로서, 청년 주인공의 사회에 대한 갈등, 그리고 화해라는 성장소설의 일반적 줄거리를 따르지 않는다. 대신, 평행 우주 개념을 빌려 규범적이고 목적론적인 성장서사 대신 다양한 성장의 경로와 의미들을 병치하고 상대화한다는 점에서 포스트모던 성장소설이라 할 만하다. 본 논문은 신자유주의 생명정치 개념을 빌려, 이 소설이 개인의 선택이 유발할 수 있는 무한한 가능성을 예찬하는 한편 그 선택을 조건 지을 사회적 맥락, 권력 관계를 주변화한다고 주장한다. 즉, 인간 활동의 의미가 구성되는 역사적, 사회적 지평이 부재하다는 점에서 이 소설은 서사의 존재 자체를 위협한다. 특히 이 소설은 삶의 목적을 제시하는 활동으로 돌봄을 제시하지만, 돌봄의 맥락의존성과 돌봄 책임의 정치적 분배에 대한 질문을 배제한다. 돌봄은 결국 공동의 노력을 통한 사회적 변화를 지향하지 못하고 개인의 보편적인 존재 조건과 책임을 재확인하는 활동으로 수렴한다. 결론적으로 본 논문은 『자정의 도서관』이 전통적 성장소설은 물론 어떠한 역사적 차원의 의미도 지향하지 못하며, 대신 동일성의 반복이라는 (반)성장서사를 제시한다고 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the meaning of self-realization in the neoliberal biopolitical system by analyzing Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library (2020). To ensure historical relevance, this study compares The Midnight Library with the traditional Bildungsroman. Traditional Bildungsromane typically depict the protagonist’s process of socialization, in which they voluntarily internalize communal norms. The Midnight Library, instead, borrows the concept of parallel universes and relativizes multiple trajectories and meanings of growth, replacing normative and teleological narratives of the traditional Bildungsroman. In this regard, The Midnight Library can be considered a postmodern Bildungsroman. Drawing on theories of neoliberal biopolitics, this paper argues that while the novel celebrates the infinite possibilities inherent in one’s choices, it marginalizes the social contexts and power relations that condition such choices. That is, the novel threatens the emergence of narrative itself as it lacks a historical and social horizon in which human activities acquire meaning. Notably, the novel presents care as a meaningful activity that gives purpose to life. However, it emphasizes individual responsibility for care while excluding questions about its contextual dependency. As a result, care serves to maintain the status quo. In conclusion, this paper contends that The Midnight Library presents an (anti-)Bildungsroman that revolves around the repetition of sameness rather than pursuing any socio-historical meaning.
