뒤샹의 메타비평: 반(反)망막주의와 광학실험에 의한 탈 원근법적 시각의 회복 I

국문 초록

본 논문은 모더니즘 전통 내에서도 가장 급진적이고 전복적인 시도로 평가될 수 있는 뒤샹의 실천을 근대적 원근법에 대한 그의 메타비평이라는 관점에서 접근하고자 한다. 뒤샹은 일찍이 체스에서 시작된 운동에 대한 관심과 반망막적 태도로부터 두뇌에 의한 행위의 상상을 실천하고자했으며, 르네상스와 바로크의 왜상 원근법과 다차원 수학에 대한 관심으로 근대적 원근법을 메타비평하려는 태도를 지닌 이였다. 그는 루셀에게 영향 받은 예술적 방법론으로 망막 예술에 대한 부정을 넘어 관념의 표상까지도 의문시하고, 그 과정에서 ‘기관’과 회전하는 광학 장치, ‘정밀 회화’와 유리 매체의 사용을 통해 회화를 벗어나 그때까지의 모든 예술적 표현 형태를 포기하는 방식으로 나아갔다. 본 논문은 일찍이 자신의 예술 실천을 근대적 원근법에 대한 메타 비평적 태도로 접근했던 뒤샹의 실험을 1911년~1915년 시기의 그의 작품을 통해 구체적으로 분석함으로써 그가 어떤 미학적 사유를 통해 이를 비판적으로 검토했는지를 고찰하고, 이것이 훗날 그의 ‘오큘리즘’과 ‘정밀 광학’ 시리즈로 발전되는 ‘욕망하는 신체로서의 눈’에 대한 미학적 사유의 토대이자 향후 뒤샹의 재발견이 이루어진 1950년대 이후의 예술가들에게 새로운 영화의 개념과 잠재성 모두를 일깨워주는 실천이었음을 주장하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to approach Duchamp’s practice, which can be evaluated as the most radical and subversive attempt even within the modernist tradition, from the perspective of his metacriticism of modern perspective. Duchamp, who had an interest in movement that began with chess and a anti-retinal attitude, attempted to practice the imagination of actions by the brain, and had an attitude of metacriticizing modern perspective with an interest in anamorphic perspective of the Renaissance and Baroque and multidimensional mathematics. With an artistic methodology influenced by Raymond Roussel, he went beyond the denial of retinal art to question even the representation of ideas, and in the process, he moved beyond painting and abandoned all forms of artistic expression up to that point through the use of ‘organs’, rotating optical devices, ‘precision painting’, and glass media. This paper analyzes Duchamp’s experiments, which he had approached with a meta-critical attitude toward modern perspective in his early artistic practice, through his works from 1911 to 1915 in order to examine what aesthetic thoughts he used to critically review them, and argues that this became the foundation of his aesthetic thoughts on the “eye as a desiring body” that later developed into his “Oculism” and “Precision Optics” series, and that it was a practice that awakened both the concept and potential of new cinema to artists after the 1950s, when Duchamp was rediscovered.
