평양 숭실의 철학 교수들 - 편하설·채필근·박치우를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 논문은 평양 숭실의 철학교육에 대한 선행연구가 있었으나 교수진에 대한 연구가 미진하여 편하설(미국인 선교사), 채필근(일본유학), 박치우(경성제대) 교수의 저작과 연구, 그 외의 활동을 구체적으로 살펴봄으로써 서양사상의 유입, 수용 그리고 변용의 모습을 그려내고자 한 시도이다. 또한 근대전환공간에서 전통적 가치로만 이해하거나 변화하는 사회에 대한 설명을 할 수 없을 때 새로운 패러다임으로 다가온 서양의 사상과 가치와 어떤 수용과 변용의 양상을 드러내는지 고찰하고 있다. 서울을 중심으로 한 학문장과 다른 성격을 형성하였던 평양 그리고 숭실에서의 철학교육은 근대전환기 서양사상의 유입과정에서 독특한 위치를 차지한다. 그 중심에는 연구의 대상인 편하설, 채필근, 박치우로 이어지는 철학교육과 그들의 활동이다. 외국인, 유학생, 경성제대로 이어지는 교수진의 성격이 철학교육에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤을까? 이 물음에 답하는 것이 이 연구의 핵심적인 부분이기도 하다. 이러한 변화는 한국철학교육사에서 경성제국대학이나 타 전문학교와 구별되는 점으로 잘 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 먼저 편하설의 철학 교육의 모습을 살펴보고, 채필근의 철학하기와 박치우의 저술활동과 사회활동을 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 평양 숭실의 철학교육은 선교사-한국인 목사-평신도로 이어진다. 이것은 서울로 이어져 한국 기독교 철학의 커다란 줄기가 되었다. 이 논문은 한국 기독교철학의 시원과 현재에 이르는 과정을 살펴보고 있다는 데 그 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is an attempt to portray the influx, acceptance, and transformation of Western thought examining in detail the writings, researches, and other activities of Western missionaries, Professors Chae Pil-geun (studying in Japan) and Park Chiwoo (Keijō Imperial University) due to the lack of research on the faculty members in Pyungyang Soongsil College. It also examines the aspects of acceptance and transformation of Western thought and values that came as a new paradigm when it was impossible to understand or explain the changing society solely with traditional values in the space of modern transition. Philosophy education in Pyungyang and Soongsil, which had different characteristics from the academic institutions centered in Seoul, occupies a unique position in the process of inflow of Western thought during the transition to modernity. At the center of this is the philosophy education and activities of Pyeon Ha-seol, Chae Pil-geun, and Park Chi-woo, the subjects of the study. How did the characteristics of foreigners, foreign students, and the faculty leading to Keijō Imperial University affect philosophy education? Answering this question is also a key part of this study. This change needs to be carefully examined as a point of distinction from Keijō Imperial University or other specialized schools in the history of Korean philosophy education. First, we looked at the form of philosophy education by Pyeon Ha-seol, and then specifically examined Chae Pil-geun’s philosophy and Park Chi-woo’s writing and social activities. The philosophy education of Pyongyang Soongsil was passed on to missionaries, Korean pastors, and laymen. This was passed on to Seoul and became a major stream of Korean Christian philosophy. The significance of this paper lies in examining the process from the beginning of Korean Christian philosophy to the present.
