스탠리 하우어워스의 실천적 신정론은 전통적 신정론의 추상성과 철학적 접근을 비판하며, 고통과 악의 문제에 대해 구체적이고 관계적인 응답을 제시한다. 전통적 신정론은 주로 자유의지, 영혼 형성, 과정 신정론 등의 이론을 통해 하나님의 선하심과 전능하심을 방어하려 하지만, 이는 고통받는 개인의 실존적 경험을 소외시키고 신앙 공동체의 연대와 돌봄을 약화시킨다는 한계를 가진다. 하우어워스는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 실천적 신정론을 제안하며, 고통을 설명하려는 대신 공동체적 실천과 신앙적 삶을 통해 그 의미를 발견하고 응답하는 방식을 강조한다. 그의 신정론은 서사(narrative), 공동체(community), 성품(character)의 중요성을 중심에 두고, 고통이 구속의 서사 속에서 신앙 공동체를 통해 재해석되고, 이를 통해 고통받는 사람들과의 관계적 연대를 구축한다. 본 논문은 하우어워스의 실천적 신정론을 철학적, 신학적, 그리고 그의 개인적 경험의 배경을 바탕으로 분석하며, 전통적 신정론과의 차별성을 탐구한다. 이를 통해 하우어워스의 신학이 고통에 대한 이론적 설명보다는, 고통 속에서의 신앙 공동체의 실천적 역할을 강조하는 독창적 대안을 제공함을 논의한다. 이 논문은 특히 한국 신학계에서 하우어워스의 실천적 신정론을 본격적으로 다룬 첫 번째 시도라는 점에서 의의를 가진다. 또한 그의 신정론을 ‘실천적 신정론’으로 개념화함으로써, 고통과 악의 문제에 대한 신학적 대안을 모색하며, 하우어워스 신학의 고유한 가치를 드러내고자 한다.

영문 초록

Stanley Hauerwas critiques traditional theodicy for its reliance on abstract philosophical reasoning, which often neglects the relational and existential dimensions of pain and suffering. Rooted in modern rationalism, traditional theodicy seeks to defend God’s goodness and omnipotence but frequently reduces suffering to impersonal explanations through arguments like free will, soul-making, and process theodicy. Hauerwas contends that this approach disregards individuals’ lived experiences and diminishes the solidarity of faith communities, undermining the practical and relational aspects of Christian responses to suffering. As an alternative, Hauerwas proposes practical theodicy, which shifts away from theoretical explanations and focuses on communal care and religious practices as responses to suffering. Practical theodicy reframes suffering within the narrative of redemption, emphasizing the role of faith communities in supporting those who suffer and rediscovering meaning through shared experiences. Central to this approach are narrative, community, and character formation, which recontextualize suffering as a communal and relational reality rather than an individual burden. This paper explores Hauerwas’s practical theodicy by examining its philosophical and theological foundations, its critique of traditional theodicy, and its unique emphasis on communal care and solidarity. By defining Hauerwas’s approach as “practical theodicy,” the study offers a framework for understanding his theology of suffering as distinct from traditional models, highlighting its relevance to contemporary pastoral practice. Through this perspective, Hauerwas’s theology provides a significant alternative for addressing the problem of suffering by fostering communal support and uncovering the redemptive potential of pain within the life of faith communities.
