『성 바울』을 통해 본 알랭 바디우의 주체 이론

국문 초록

본 논문은 알랭 바디우의 저술 『성 바울』을 중심으로 그의 철학의 중심 주제인 주체 이론을 살펴보고 있다. 바디우의 주체는 진리와 사건이라는 두 중심 개념과 함께 사유해야 하는 것으로, 바울의 텍스트를 통해 바디우는 진리의 보편성인 “모두에게 전달된다”는 주제와 그리스도의 부활 사건 이후 그리스도교에 충실한 주체의 모습, 그러나 분열에 직면할 수밖에 없는 주체의 모습을 분석하고 있다. 이러한 바디우의 바울 독해는 바울을 동시대성으로 사유하려는 따라서 바울의 현대성을 통해 현실의 문제를 역으로 진단하고 그 대안을 찾으려는 그의 예리한 시대적 개입이 전제되어 있음을 알 수 있게 한다. 바디우는 바울을 무엇보다 ‘반철학자’로 규정한다. 또한 바울은 바디우에게 보편주의의 창시자이며, 그의 그리스도교를 위한 주체적 행위는 ‘투사’로서 조명된다. 매 순간 개입의 위급함을 보여주는 바울의 서신들은 투사로서 전략적 치밀함을 보여주는 것이요, 셰익스피어에 비유되는 서시들이다. 그러나 본 논문은 바디우의 바울 텍스트 분석을 통한 주장의 내용을 밝히는 것은 물론, 그리스도교인의 시각에서 비신앙인으로서 바디우가 바울의 텍스트를 분석하는데 갖게 되는 한계와 문제점도 짚어보고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines Alain Badiou’s theory of the subject, a central theme in his philosophy, with a focus on his work Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism. Badiou’s concept of the subject must be understood in conjunction with the two key notions of truth and event. Through Paul’s texts, Badiou analyzes the universality of truth, encapsulated in the idea that it is “addressed to all,” as well as the figure of the faithful subject to Christianity following the event of Christ’s resurrection. However, he also explores the subject’s inevitable confrontation with division. Badiou’s interpretation of Paul reflects his intent to think of Paul in contemporaneity, diagnosing modern issues through Paul’s relevance and seeking alternatives in response. Badiou primarily defines Paul as an “anti-philosopher.” Additionally, Paul is seen by Badiou as the founder of universalism, with his subjective actions for Christianity illuminated as those of a “militant.” Paul’s epistles, demonstrating the urgency of intervention at every moment, reveal strategic precision as a militant and are likened to Shakespearean prologues. However, this paper not only elucidates the claims arising from Badiou’s analysis of Pauline texts but also aims to address the limitations and problems that emerge from Badiou’s approach as a non-believer analyzing Paul’s texts from a non-Christian perspective.
