국문 초록

이 논문은 간디이즘(Gandhiism)을 새롭게 조명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 간디이즘은 일체의 정치적 운동과 종교적 신념이 무관하지 않다는 사실을 보여준다. 간디가 일생 동안 보여준 비폭력을 향한 실천 의지는 아힘사로 대변된다. 아힘사는 생명 경외와 생명 살림을 지향하는 불살생의 사상이자 실천이다. 비폭력 운동은 ‘사티아그라하(Satyagraha)’, 즉 진리의 힘으로 명명된다. 간디에게 그것은 경건한 종교적 의미인 동시에 사회적 개혁을 가능케 하는 원동력이었다. 그런데 사회를 개혁할 진정한 힘은 인간 내면의 변혁에 있고, 이에 대한 확신은 간디 특유의 낙관주의였다. 간디의 낙관주의는 비폭력을 발휘할 수 있는 개인 능력의 무한한 가능성에 있었고, 여기에는 인간적인 노력 외에 종교적인 것의 도움이 요청된다. 그것은 타자의 행복을 침해하지 않는 자기-제어력으로, 살아있는 모든 것과 자기를 동일시하는 자기 정화가 필요하다. 자기 정화는 전염성이 매우 강해 그 주변의 정화를 지향하고, 이것이 개인을 넘어 사회화되면 진정한 행복과 평화가 도래한다. 따라서 간디이즘에 나타난 종교란 개인의 사사로운 행위를 넘어 공공의 선(善)을 추구하는 종교의 공공성에 관한 담론이자 실천행위라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to shed new light on Gandhiism. Gandhiism shows that all political movements and religious beliefs are not unrelated. The will to practice non-violence that Gandhi showed throughout his life is represented by Ahimsa. Ahimsa is the idea and practice of non-killing that aims to revere life and preserve life. The movement of non-violence is named ‘Satyagraha’, that is, the power of truth. For Gandhi, it had a pious religious meaning and was at the same time a driving force that made social reform possible. However, the true power to reform society lies in the transformation within humans, and Gandhi’s unique optimism was his confidence in this. Gandhi’s optimism lay in the infinite possibility of an individual’s ability to exercise non-violence, which requires the help of religion in addition to human efforts. It is a self-control that does not infringe on the happiness of others, and it requires self-purification to identify oneself with all living things. Self-purification is so contagious that it aims to purify those around it, and when this becomes socialized beyond the individual, true happiness and peace arrive. Therefore, religion in Gandhianism can be said to be a discourse and practice about the publicity of religion that pursues the public good beyond individual private actions.
