국내 울향(鬱香)의 분포 조사를 통해서 본 조선시대의 울릉도 인식

국문 초록

이 논문은, 울릉도를 제외한, 우리나라 내지에 분포되어있는 노거수 ‘울향’에 대한 기초적인 검토를 한 것이다. 조선시대에 울릉도 출입이 빈번함에 따라 적지 않은 향나무가 내지로 반출돼 식재되었음을 알 수 있다. 그 이유는 조선시대의 유교 사회에서 울향은 제례 등의 면에서 명품 향으로 인기가 있었기 때문이다. 이것은 조선의 생활사에서 향나무를 매개로 울릉도 인식이 일반화돼 있었음을 알 수 있는 대목이다. 현재 울릉도를 제외하고 국내에 자라고 있는 노거수 울향은 5건 정도이다. 다시 말해서 ‘국가유산청’에 등록된 울향은, 울릉도를 제외한 우리나라 내지의 것은 ‘4건’(추정을 포함하면 5건)이다. 다만 필자가 추가한 영주 문정동 향나무 1건을 더하면 모두 5건(추정을 포함하면 6건)이 된다. 향후 심층조사를 통해 추가될 가능성이 있다. 울릉도에서 향나무를 캐어왔다는 공식기록은 현재 확인할 수 없으나 “떠내려왔다”는 우회적 표현이나 “가져왔다”는 구전 기록을 통해서 울향이 적지 않게 조선 내지로 유입되었다고 본다. 추후 이에 대한 검증이 필요하다. 이번 논의를 토대로, 국내 노거수 울향의 현황, 특히 울진, 삼척, 영해, 포항 등 동해안 일대의 유교 문중 노거수에 대해 폭넓고도 정밀한 조사가 절실함을 알 수 있다. 나아가 울릉도 출입이 잦았던 일인(日人)들이 일본으로 반출돼 식재된 울향의 예를 돗토리현과 시마네현 등 일본 현지답사를 통해 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is a basic review of the 'Ulhyang' of Nogesu(the old giant tree) distributed in the inland areas of Korea, excluding Ulleungdo. During the Joseon Dynasty, as Ulleungdo was frequently visited, it can be seen that a large number of juniper trees were taken out to the interior and planted. The reason for this is that in the Confucian society of the Joseon Dynasty, Ulhyang was popular as a luxury incense in terms of rituals. This shows that in the history of life in Joseon, the perception of Ulleungdo was generalized through the medium of juniper trees. Currently, there are only about 5 cases of Nogesu Ulhyang growing in Korea, excluding Ulleungdo. In other words, there are 4 cases of Ulhyang registered with the National Heritage Administration, and there are 4 cases (5 if you include estimates) in the interior of Korea, excluding Ulleungdo. However, if we add the 1 case of the feudal Munjeong-dong juniper tree that I added, it will be a total of 5 cases (6 cases if you include estimates). It is possible that it will be added through in-depth investigation in the future. Although there is currently no official record of the harvesting of juniper wood from Ulleungdo, it is believed that a significant amount of incense was brought into Korea through the roundabout expression “drifted away” or oral records of “brought”. This needs to be verified in the future. Based on this discussion, it can be seen that there is an urgent need for a broad and detailed investigation of the current status of the country's Noge-su Ulhyang, especially the Confucian Munjung Nogesu in the East Sea area such as Uljin, Samcheok, Yeonghae, and Pohang. Furthermore, it is necessary to look at the examples of Ulhyang, which was brought to Japan by Japanese people who frequently visited Ulleungdo, and were planted, through field trips to Japan, such as Tottori and Shimane prefectures.
