장한상의 임술(1682) 통신사행 참여 연구

국문 초록

운암(雲巖) 장한상(張漢相)은 경상도 비안현 외서면 비산리에서 무관인 장시규(張是奎)의 차남으로 출생하여 21세의 나이로 무과에 급제하였다. 이후 무관으로서 중앙관직 및 지방관 등 전국의 요직을 두루 지냈다. 지금까지 그의 업적은 『울릉도사적』의 발굴로 인해 1694년 최초의 수토사로서 울릉도를 수토한 점을 중심으로 학계에서 주목을 받아왔다. 본 연구에서는 장한상이 조선통신사의 일원으로 임술사행 참여를 한 사실을 중심으로 그의 행적을 검토한 것이다. 이글에서 밝혀진 것은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경덕사에 남겨진 초상화에서처럼 장한상은 무인으로서 기예와 용맹스러움이 출장하였고, 그러한 그의 소성(素性)과 무예(武藝)로 인하여 그를 임술사행(壬戌使行)의 일원으로 차정하게 되었던 것이다. 그는 종3품의 품계인 군관으로 제2기선에 승선하여 일본으로 건너갔으며, 지금까지 발굴된 사행기록에서는 그의 개인적인 행적은 확인할 수 없다. 둘째, 조선통신사 사행에서 일본인들과 대담할 때에 “일본인들을 벌벌 떨게 하였다”고 할 만큼 담력이 뛰어났고, 이러한 그의 군관으로서의 임무수행이 귀국 후 관직 승진에 연결되었다. 이러한 통신사행의 일원으로서의 경험을 높이 사서 1694년 삼척첨사(영장)로 임명되었고 수토관으로 울릉도 수토를 수행하게 되는 것이다. 셋째, 『승평문헌록』에서, 일본에 통신사의 일원으로 파견되었을 때 일본인들이 그의 지략과 용맹에 감복하여 “장한상 같은 사람 몇 명만 있으면 대국도 감히 모욕하지 못할 것”이라고 하였다는 사실은 확인되지 않는다. 이것은 희천군수 시절 청나라와의 관계에서 “전언”라는 식의 소문이 와전된 것으로 보인다. 장한상의 임술사행 참여 관련 문헌은 『天和信使奉行每日記(덴나신사봉행매일기)』, 『東槎錄(동사록)』, 『東槎日錄(동사일록)』, 『紀年便攷(기년편고)』 등 현재로서는 아주 제한적이다. 임술사행에서 보다 구체적인 행적을 계속해서 찾아내야 할 것이며, 임술사행 관련 기록이 향후 더 발굴될 것으로 기대된다. 이와 함께 『승평문헌록』 등 순천장씨 문중사료를 보다 깊이 있게 검토할 필요가 있다. 이러한 점은 향후 과제로 삼고자 한다.

영문 초록

Unam Jang Han-sang who has born as a second son of Jang Shi-gyu who recorded as a Military Class in Bisan-ri, Oeseo-myeon, Gyeongsang- do(province), and passed the Military Official Class Test at the age of 21. He experienced a various position as an important man of military officer throughout the central government and regional office. Until, his performance in the position was well known as a first land inspector about Ulleungdo in 1694 record and academic field of today still remember his performance. This study reviewed the fact that he participated as a member of land inspection activity as one of delgates of Imsul year to Japan. Below description in the below illustrates about his activity. First, as portraited in his figure at Gyeongdeok-sa Shrine, Jang Han-sang was an excellent military official with his courageous and art ability, and his talent was admitted as a member of delegates in the year of Imsul though he was ranked in the next third level government official. He sailed to Japan on the 2nd ship among the delegation team. However, his personal activity was not revealed in any records in the Korean history. Second, he was very courageous during the debate with Japanese officials, and his successful completion of duty reflected to his opportunity to upgrade official level in Korean government after the official visit. In respond his excellent activity as a delegation to Japan, he was appointed as Samcheok town chief position (Cheomsa) in 1694 and executed as a land inspector to Ulleungdo. Third, the description about Jang Han-sang by Japanese part was not confirmed in any records as fact which seems legendary known as in when he was dispatched as a member of the delegation to Japan and people praised him. “If there are some persons as Jang Han-sang in Korea, any big countries would not invade the country.” It seems to a distorted story about Jang Han-sang as a rumor in diplomatic relation with the Ching Dynasty. The literature about Jang Han-sang’s Imsul year delegation participation activity was limited in , , , etc. There should be more efforts to find concrete activity record about him, and expect more materials may reveal his activity. In accordance with these activities and Suncheon Jang’s Family historic records could include. This task was remained as a future task of our research.
