세계시민교육으로서의 국제자원활동 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구

국문 초록

본 논의는 세계시민교육으로서 국제자원활동의 가능성을 탐구한 내러티브 연구이다. 본 연구는 다층적 세계시민성 개념과 제한된 세계시민교육의 대상, 그리고 세계시민성의 실천성에 문제의식을 갖는다. 이 문제의식은 세계시민성의 맥락적 이해, 세계시민 교육 대상의 확장, 그리고 교육대상의 실천적 세계시민성 확보의 필요성을 요구한다. 본 연구는 이를 해소하고자 실천적 프로젝트로서 국제자원활동을 제안하며 활동 경험과 과정을 탐구하고자 한다. 여기서 실천적 프로젝트는 실천적 교육방법으로 남진숙(2024)이 제시하는 프로젝트 기반 학습(project-based learning)에 지리적·문화적 경계를 확장한 실천적 환경이라는 요인을 포함한다. 국제자원활동을 실천적 프로젝트로 제안하는 배경은 첫째, 인식 전환의 기회(박수연, 2010), 타문화에 대한 이해(허창수, 2012)를 자극하며 실천적 프로젝트의 가능성을 가진다는 점과(허창수, 2013), 둘째, 국제자원활동이 함유한 프로젝트 기반 학습을 토대로 한 활동 방식이 세계시민교육의 실천적 교육방법으로 활용될 수 있기 때문이다(허창수, 고권혁, 2015). 그러므로 실천적 프로젝트로서 국제자원활동의 탐구는 세계시민성 개념을 질적으로 이해하고, 세계시민교육의 대상과 실천적 방법에 대한 확장을 꾀하는 과정이 된다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 라오스에서 국제자원활동을 했던 소수민족 자원활동가의 경험을 내러티브 방법론을 통해 확보한다. 이 내러티브는 지역공동체 시민활동 경험에서 세계시민성 개념을 도출한 이윤진, 김남숙(2020)이 제시한 세 가지 범주를 구조 삼아 수행되었으며, 연구결과로 자신에 대한 새로운 자각과 변화의 의지, 자발적 실천을 위한 자기 가치의 형성 과정, 타문화에 대한 포용적 이해의 내러티브를 도출하였다. 이를 통해 국제자원활동을 통해 세계시민성 함양을 확인함으로써 국제자원활동을 실천적 프로젝트로 제시할 근거를 마련할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the potential of global citizenship education that cultivates global citizenship. The starting point of this study is to first understand the multi-layered and declarative concept of global citizenship in context. Another purpose is to propose international volunteering as a practical project of global citizenship education. This is to improve the ineffective education method of global citizenship education from its limited method and target. To this end, this study explores the experience of an ethnic minority activist who engaged in international volunteering in Laos by documenting her personal narrative. The narrative analysis was carried out by using the three scopes specified by Yunjin Lee and Namsuk Kim (2020), who derived the concept of global citizenship from the experience of civic activities in the local community. Through discussion, the narrative inquiry shows us 3 stages of global citizenship that 1) self perception and willing to change, 2) the process of forming self-worth for voluntary practice, and 3) inclusive understanding of other cultures, and the three scopes ‘perception of reality and willingness to change’, ‘critical reflection and practice’, and ‘universal humanitarianism’ can be understood as a process stage of cultivating global citizenship, not an independent concept. In addition, by confirming that global citizenship can be cultivated through international volunteering, it provides the basis that international volunteering can be proposed as a practical project of global citizenship education.
