국문 초록

국가 차원에서 이공계열 우수 인재, 즉, 석·박사급 인재의 양성과 확보가 중요한 산업적 요구이자 정책 의제가 되었다. 이러한 사회적 요구에 부응하기 위해서는 이공계열 대학원의 경우 학생들이 무엇을 기대하고 대학원에 진학하였는지, 대학원 생활의 핵심으로서 전공지식 함양과 연구력 증진을 위해 참여한 연구 활동에서 어떠한 경험을 하였는지를 파악하고, 그들의 진로에 끼친 영향을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 이공계열 일반대학원에 재학 중인 학생들의 진학 동기와 대학원에 대한 기대를 살펴보고, 연구 활동에 참여하면서 겪은 다양한 경험과 고충을 심층적으로 탐색하며, 그러한 대학원 경험들이 졸업 후 진로 선택에 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 국내 이공계열 일반대학원에 재학 중인 석·박사과정 학생 14명을 대상으로 대학 소재지, 학교 유형을 기준으로 나누어 표적 집단 면담(Focus Group Interview)을 시행하고, 질적 연구 방법에 따라 연구 결과를 심층 해석하여 제시하였다. 또한, 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 이공계열 대학원으로의 진학을 촉진하고, 핵심적인 대학원 경험이라고 할 수 있는 연구 활동에 더욱 몰입할 수 있도록 지원하는 방안을 모색하여 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The importance of securing top talent in the science and engineering fields, particularly those with master's and doctoral degrees, is growing nationwide. However, there has been relatively little academic research on why these individuals choose to pursue graduate education and what they expect from their experience in general graduate schools, compared to other higher education topics. This study aims to explore the motivations for entering graduate school, the research experiences of science and engineering students in general graduate schools, and the various challenges and positive experiences they encounter during their research participation. It also examines the career paths they are considering after obtaining their degrees. To achieve these objectives, focus group interviews were conducted with 14 master's and doctoral students in the science and engineering fields, selected based on university location and school type. These interviews provided insights into the motivations and expectations of these graduate students, their concerns about entering graduate school, their research experiences, and their career plans post-graduation. The findings were organized using qualitative research methods. Finally, based on the study's results, we propose measures to encourage more students to pursue graduate education in science and engineering and to support them in focusing on their research during their studies.
