미국 고등직업교육기관의 교양교육 운영 및 질관리 사례 - 전문대학에 주는 시사점을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 전문학사와 연계하여 응용학사학위를 운영하는 미국의 Lake Washington Institute ofTechnology, New York City College of Technology의 교양교과 운영 및 질 관리 방안을 분석함으로써전문대학 교양교육의 시사점을 얻고자 시도되었다. 사례 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 두 대학은전문학사와 응용학사과정 각각에 상당한 비중의 교양교육과정을 편성하고 수직적으로 연계함으로써직업교육 과정의 학습자들이 공통 핵심 기술을 익힐 수 있도록 한다. 둘째, 두 대학 모두 학생들의핵심역량과 교양교육을 교과 내 활동과 연계하여 평가함으로써 학생들의 취약점을 분석하여 교과개선에 반영하고 있다. 이상의 결과를 통해 연구자는 전문대학 교양교육에서 얻을 수 있는 시사점을 세가지 도출하였다. 첫째, 교양교육의 양적 확대를 위하여 직업 위주 전문학사의 유형을 다양화해서 교양학점을 차등화하거나 전문학사와 전공심화를 연계한 교양교육과정을 체계화 할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 전문대학 교양교육에서인지적 사고능력 개발이 중요한 목표로 설정될 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 글쓰기 교과목을 교양 교과로편성하고 전문대학 교양교육 중에서 비중이 높은 소양과 직업기초 영역의 교과목 운영 목표를 점검할필요가 있다. 셋째, 핵심역량 진단도구를 넘어 교양교육 성과를 질적으로 평가하는 방안이 도입될필요가 있다. 핵심역량의 달성도를 교과에서 직접 평가할 수 있도록 평가 도구를 개발하고 교과 운영방식을 개선할 수 있도록 지원할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to obtain implications for the systematization and qualitative operation of university college(junmundaehak in Korean) general education by analyzing the implementation and quality management method of the LakeWashington Institute of Technology and New York City College of Technology in the United States. These schools offerboth applied associate degrees (AAS) and bachelor of applied science (BAS) degrees. The results of this case analysis areas follows. First, both universities vertically link the general education courses of AAS to BAS programs, individually witha significant proportion of general education, so that learners on the track of vocational programs can cultivate common coreskills. Second, both universities evaluate students' acquired college-wide learning outcomes in the selected subjects, analyzestudents' weaknesses on based on a standardized rubric, and devise improvement plans in the corresponding subjects. Through the above results, the researcher drew three implications that could be obtained for junmundaehak general education. First, it is reasonable to diversify the types of vocational-oriented degree such as AAS, AS, AAS-T in Washington State inorder to differentiate required general education credits, and to systematize general education curriculum in connecting toadvanced degree course (jungongsimhwa in Korean) in order to vertically design the general education curriculum. Second,this study recommends that instructors include intellectual skills as an objective of junmundaehak general education. Tothis end, it is necessary to offer required composition courses and correspondingly revise respective course learning outcomesand teaching/learning methods. Third, it is necessary to introduce plans to properly evaluate general education outcomesbeyond diagnosis tools or surveys. It is also necessary to improve the course embedded assessment so that the achievementof core competences can be evaluated in connection with the subject, and course improvement plans can be initiated tomake up for any weaknesses.
