국문 초록

과학기술이 고도로 발전하면서 개인의 삶과 사회에 근본적인 변화가 진행되고 있다. 이런 시기에이과와 문과로 구분하는 이분법적인 사고는 국가가 미래 사회에 적합한 인재를 양성하는데 걸림돌이되고 있다. 21세기 이후 일본 정부는 문·이과 조기 구분 교육과 그로 인한 대학 교육의 한계를 극복하기위해 문리횡단·문리융합교육을 지속적으로 추진하고 있다. 정부의 재정과 정책적 지원에 따라 일본의대학은 환경학, 데이터 과학 등 학제적 학문 분야의 학위과정, 문제 해결 중심의 교육과정, 이중 전공과부전공 제도 활성화 및 교양학 학사학위 등 다양한 방식으로 문리횡단교육을 추구하고 있다. 또한교양교육 본연의 취지에 맞게 목표를 재정립하고 교양 교육을 강화하려는 움직임이 가시화되고 있다. 이 논문은 일본 정부의 공식 문서와 논문들을 통해 문리횡단교육 추진의 배경과 과정을 탐색하여,그것이 ‘21세기 자유학예’의 추구라는 큰 틀에서 진행되고 있고, 세계적으로 자유교육이 재부상하고있는 흐름과 같은 맥락임을 보여준다.

영문 초록

As science and technology advance, fundamental changes are taking place in individual lives and society. At this time,the dichotomous thinking that excessively distinguishes between science and humanities, as is prevalent in Korea and Japan,hinders the nurturing of the next generation’s capabilities. Since the 21st century, the Japanese government has continuedto promote transversal and/or convergence education in science and humanities to overcome the limitations of early specializationin secondary education and the resulting limitations in college education. With the help of government financial and policysupport, Japanese universities offer transversal education in a variety of ways, such as degree programs in interdisciplinaryfields such as environmental studies and data science, a problem-solving-oriented curriculum, the activation of double majorand minor systems, and bachelor degree programs in the liberal arts. Also, a trend began to redefine education goals tofit its nature and strengthen the liberal arts and sciences. This article explores the background and process of promotingtransversal education through the Japanese government's official documents and articles, showing that it is being carriedout within the larger framework of the pursuit of liberal arts in the 21st century. Lastly, this study shows that these trendsfit into the context of liberal education and demonstrates how this field is reemerging globally.
