국문 초록

우리는 본 글에서 칼빈(John Calvin)의 은혜의 개념을 검토하면서, 은혜라는 개념이 내포한 복잡성을 고려할 것이다. 우리는 칼빈의 은혜 개념에서 항상 우선성과 비상응성이 전적으로 구분되는 요소가 아니라는 점을 고려해야 한다. 또한 칼빈이 말하는 은혜의 우선성의 개념이 항상 예정과 관련되는 것은 아니라는 점을 살필 것이다. 오히려 칼빈의 은혜의 개념은 창조, 율법, 성육신의 측면에서 다양하게 나타나며, 은혜의 우선성은 선행하는 자질이 없는 죄인들에게 베풀어진다는 점에서 비상응성과 우선성이 겹쳐진다는 점을 살펴볼 것이다. 또한 우리는 4 Ezra, 호다요트(Hodayot)와는 달리 LAB와 바울에서는 은혜의 우선성과 비상응성이 겹쳐져 있다는 점을 언급할 것이다. 우리는 필로(Philo of Alexandria)의 경우를 고려하면서 은혜의 우선성이 언제나 하나님의 제 1 원인과 주권에만 한정되는 것이 아니라는 점을 고려할 것이다. 우리는 비상응성과 우선성이 겹쳐지는 선물의 속성을 “소여성”(givenness)이라고 정의를 내릴 것이다. 소여성은 주어져 있음을 나타내며, 특정한 사건 이전에 주어져 있는 경험을 나타낸다. 본 논문이 논의할 소여성의 관점에서 존 바클레이(John M.G. Barclay)가 샌더스의 유대교 해석에서 비상응성과 우선성을 구분하지 않았다고 지적한 것에는 정당한 지점이 존재하지만, 비상응성과 우선성이 언제나 구분되는 것은 아니라는 점에서 바클레이의 은혜의 범주를 재고할 여지가 있다. 하나님의 은혜가 넘쳐 흐르는 것이고 자격 없는 자에게 주어진 선물이라는 점을 바클레이는 바르게 강조한다. 반면 신자가 선을 행할 능력이 없을 때 하나님의 선행하는 은총이 주어졌다는 은혜의 시작 지점에 대한 바울의 가르침은 바클레이에 의해서 강조되지 않는다.

영문 초록

In this paper, we will examine John Calvin’s and John M.G. Barclay’s concept of grace, taking into account the complexity inherent in this concept. It is essential to recognize that, in Calvin’s notion of grace, the aspects of priority and incongruity are not always distinctly separate elements. Additionally, we will explore how Calvin’s concept of the priority of grace is not always directly associated with predestination. Instead, Calvin’s understanding of grace manifests diversely in the contexts of creation, law, and incarnation, where the priority of grace overlaps with incongruity in its extension to sinners who lack prior qualities. Furthermore, we will mention that, unlike in 4 Ezra and Hodayot, in LAB and Paul, the priority and incongruity of grace are intertwined. While considering the case of Philo of Alexandria, we will take into account that the priority of grace is not always exclusively limited to God’s primary cause and sovereignty. We will define the overlapping attributes of incongruity and priority in gifts as “givenness,” which denotes being bestowed, representing experiences given prior to specific events. From the perspective of ‘givenness’ that this paper will discuss, while John M.G. Barclay’s critique of Sanders’ interpretation of Judaism in failing to distinguish between incongruity and priority in grace holds merit, there is room to reconsider Barclay’s categories of grace, as incongruity and priority are not always distinct. Barclay rightly emphasizes that God’s grace is abundant and a gift to the undeserving. However, he does not emphasize Paul’s teaching on the initiation point of grace, where God’s preceding grace is given when the believer is incapable of doing good.
