영문 초록

In the 1960s, as the Charismatic movement was making inroads into denominations across the ecumenical spectrum, Reformed churches were actively responding to the Holy Spirit movement. Among them were scholars who welcomed the movement and sought to integrate it into Reformed theology. J. Rodman Williams was a Reformed systematic theologian who was at the forefront of this effort and attempted to systematize it academically. This article will examine his theology with a focus on the “baptism in the Holy Spirit.” It will begin with the context in which Williams began this work, identify his historical reflections on Reformed spirituality, and focus on how the core of his thought differs from traditional Reformed and classical Pentecostalism. It concludes with an assessment of his thought from a traditional Reformed perspective. First and foremost, Williams embraced the Charismatic Movement with the intention of restoring a dynamic Christian faith at a time when the notion of “Death of God theology” was getting in vogue and American Christianity was losing its vitality. He criticizes traditional Reformed pneumatology as overly static, and is interested in the dynamism of the Charismatic movement. In the end, however, rather than advocating the same ideas as classical Pentecostalism, Williams embraces a modified form of the Reformed position. In other words, he seeks to offer a moderate compromise between Reformed and Pentecostal pneumatology. The purpose of this paper is to examine in detail the contributions and limitations of this approach.
