갱신된 시내산 언약, 연속성과 비연속성

국문 초록

최초의 시내산 언약(출 19-20장)이 체결되기까지 이스라엘이 신실한 언약의 당사자였다고 평할 수 없는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 금송아지 사건(출 32-34장)은 이스라엘이 한 민족으로서 질적으로 다른 범죄를 일으킨 일대사건이다. 이러한 면을 염두에 두고 출 32-34장의 금송아지 사건과 이어진 언약 갱신 이야기를 살펴보면, 우리는 공동체적 갱신에 대한 성경 최초의 메시지를 발견하게 된다. 필자는 먼저 금송아지 사건에 대한 연구사를 살펴보고, 특별히 시내산 언약 갱신(출 34장)에 대한 그간의 연구가 형성사에 치우쳐져 있음으로써, 이것의 신학적 의미는 다소 도외시되어 왔음을 지적했다. 필자는 32-34장의 금송아지 이야기(pericope)의 문예적 완결성을 염두에 두면서, 특별히 출애굽기 34:1-28의 내적 구조를 분석했다. 이러한 본문 관찰에 비추어, 출애굽기 34:1-28과 출애굽기 20-23장의 본문들과의 상호연관성을 별도의 장을 할애하여 다루었다. 이 본문은 출애굽기 19-24장에 기술된 최초의 시내산 언약 사건을 인지하고 있고, 그것을 요약 기술하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 즉, 출애굽기 34:1-28은 시내산 언약의 갱신으로서 내적 완결성을 가진 텍스트로 기록되었다. 시내산 언약(출 19-23)의 수여와 언약의 갱신(출 34장) 사이에 존재하는 연속성은 선명하다. 중요한 점은 언약의 중추적인 요점들이 그대로 견지되고 있다는 사실이다. 필자는 이러한 연속성과 언약 규정들의 취사선택의 목적이 ‘다시 여호와를 기억하며 거룩한 삶을 살아갈 것’에 있음을 살펴보았다. 이스라엘 백성이 하나님의 ‘용서’를 받아야 하는 새로운 언약적 환경 속에서, 예전에 세우신 언약을 재진술하며, 옛 언약에 대한 새로운 헌신을 요청하시는 하나님의 영속적인 메시지가 이 안에 담겨 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

It is true that Israel cannot be said to have been a faithful party to the covenant until the first Sinai covenant (Exodus 19-20) was concluded. However, the golden calf incident (Exodus 32-34) was a major event in which Israel committed qualitatively different transgressions as a people. Keeping this aspect in mind, when we examine the golden calf incident in Exodus 32-34 and the subsequent narrative of covenant renewal, we discover the Bible’s initial message concerning communal renewal. For this purpose, the author reviewed the history of research on the golden calf incident and pointed out that current research on the renewal of the covenant at Mount Sinai (Exodus 34) had been predominantly focused on its historical formation, somewhat neglecting its theological significance. To address this issue, the internal structure of Exodus 34:1-28 was specifically analyzed, bearing in mind the literary completeness of the golden calf story (pericope) in chapters 32-34. In light of these textual observations, a separate chapter was dedicated to exploring the interconnections between the texts of Exodus 34:1-28 and Exodus 20-23. The continuity between the granting of the Sinai covenant (Exodus 19-23) and its renewal (Exodus 34) is evident. What is crucial is that the central tenets of the covenant are upheld. The author contends that the purpose behind this continuity and the selection of covenant regulations is to “remember Yahweh again and lead a holy life.” In a new covenant environment, where the Israelites must receive God’s forgiveness, it can be argued that this conveys God’s enduring message. It reaffirms the covenant established in the past while requesting a fresh commitment to the old covenant.
