국문 초록

한국교회사 연구에서 ‘영적 각성’(spiritual awakening)은 20세기 초에 한국 교회에서 일어났던 세 차례 부흥운동과 관련되어 연구되었다. 이로써 교회사적 연구는 영적 각성을 말씀과 기도를 통해 성령께서 특별히 일으키시는 회개와 그리스도를 닮아가는 덕스러운 삶의 회복으로 이해한다. 영적 각성에 대한 이런 연구는 두 가지 측면에서 보완될 필요가 있다. 첫째, 영적 각성을 보편적인 기독교 신앙의 내용으로 이해할 수 있어야 한다. 왜냐하면 회개와 그리스도를 닮은 기독교적 덕을 행하는 삶으로서의 영적 각성은 개별적 부흥운동이기에 앞서 보편적인 기독교 신앙의 내용이다. 둘째, 영적 각성과 기독론적 믿음의 관계를 더욱 분명하게 정립해야 한다. 영적 각성에 대한 교회사적 연구는 회개와 삶의 변화를 일으키시는 성령 하나님의 특별하면서도 구체적인 역사를 강조한다. 이때, 예수 그리스도의 인격과 사역에 대한 기독교의 보편적인 믿음은 영적 각성의 실마리일 수 있어도 그것의 내재적 원리가 되지 못한다. 그러나 기독론적 믿음과 내재적 관계성을 상실한 성령의 사역은 신학적으로 불가능하다. 언급한 문제의식과 관련하여, 본고는 회개와 그리스도를 닮은 덕스러운 삶으로 요약되는 영적 각성은 신학적 인간론의 본질적 요소이기에 진정한 영적 각성은 기독교의 보편적 믿음의 내용임을 보이고자 한다. 또한, 본고는 영적 각성이 그리스도에 대한 믿음에 의해 가능함을 보임으로써 영적 각성과 기독론적 믿음의 내재적 관계를 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 교부신학의 도움을 받을 것이다. 교부들 중 신학적 인간론의 발전에 기여한 바가 큰 니사의 그레고리우스(Gregory of Nyssa, c.335-c.395)와 히포의 아우구스티누스(Augustine of Hippo, 354-430)는 피조물로부터 하나님께로 전향하는 근본적인 회개와 신적인 덕을 모방하는 덕스러운 삶이 하나님의 형상으로서의 인간 존재의 본질적인 것임을 보여주고, 이러한 회개와 덕의 모방이 오직 기독론적 믿음으로 가능함을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

In the study of Korean church history, ‘spiritual awakening’ has been studied in relation to the three revival movements that occurred in the early 20th century. Historical researches understand spiritual awakening as repentance brought about by the Holy Spirit and as the restoration of a virtuous life in the likeness of Christ. This idea needs to be supplemented in two aspects. First, spiritual awakening as repentance and a virtuous life must be understood as an essential content of Christian faith. Second, the relationship between spiritual awakening and Christological faith needs to be more clearly defined. When historical researches emphasize the special work of the Spirit, faith in Christ’s person and work, while it can be a clue to spiritual awakening, is not its intrinsic principle. However, the work of the Holy Spirit, which has lost its intrinsic relation to Christological faith, is theologically doubtful. This paper argues that spiritual awakening, summarized as repentance and a virtuous life imitating Christ, is an essential element of theological anthropology. It also identifies the intrinsic relationship between spiritual awakening and Christological faith by showing that the former is made possible through the latter. To do this, I will draw on Gregory of Nyssa(c.335-c.395) and Augustine of Hippo(354-430) who contributed significantly to the development of theological anthropology. They showed that fundamental repentance as conversion from the creature to God and a virtuous life that imitates the divine virtues are intrinsic to human being as the image of God, and emphasized that such repentance and imitation are possible only through Christological faith.
