토마스 아퀴나스의 아리스토텔레스 정치사상의 수용과 ‘개인’에 대한 담론의 가능성

국문 초록

본 연구는 아리스토텔레스의 국가이해를 수용한 토마스 아퀴나스의 국가이해에 대한 고찰이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 먼저, 아리스토텔레스의 국가이해가 잘 나타나는 그의 『정치학』을 주해하고, 또 인용하는 과정에서 토마스가 보여 주는 변화를 고찰하였다. 즉 ‘인간은 정치적 동물’이라는 아리스토텔레스의 주장을, 토마스는 창조적 질서로 설명한다. 그리고 국가의 목적에 대하여도 ‘좋은 삶’이라는 아리스토텔레스의 이해에서, 토마스는 ‘행복한 삶’으로 해석하며, 그것은 종말론적으로 완성된다는 기독교적 이해를 첨가하여, 국가는 ‘행복한 삶’을 위해 적극적으로 기여하는 것으로 설명한다. 또한 국가의 목적인 공동선에서 아리스토텔레스가 주재자의 필요성을 이끌어 낸다면, 토마스는 모든 이들이 공동의 선을 위해 참여하고 기여하는 것이 창조 질서임을 드러낸다. 토마스가 국가를 ‘자충적이며 가장 완전한 공동체’로 제시하며, 모든 개별적 선을 수렴하는 것으로 제시할 때, 결과적으로 ‘개인’이 공동체에 함몰되는 결과가 예상된다. 그러나 토마스는 국가의 내적인 한계들을 제시하며 이를 거절하고 있다. 그 결과로 전체로서의 국가에 대하여 ‘개인’의 담론의 가능성을 모색할 수 있다. 비록 토마스의 정치사상에서 ‘개인’에 대한 담론은 나타나지 않고, 역사적으로 시기상조이기는 하지만, 그의 다양한 저술들을 검토할 때, 토마스가 개인에 대한 강조, 개인의 의지와 양심의 자유를 강조하는 것으로 보아 ‘개인’에 대한 담론의 가능성이 발견된다.

영문 초록

This study is a consideration of Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of the state, which accepted Aristotle's understanding of the state. In this study we consider the introduction of Aristotle’s 『Politics』to the West, which clearly shows Aristotle's understanding of the state, and examined how Thomas added the new aspect to that. In other words, Thomas explains in views of the Christian belief the Aristotle’s argument that ‘humans are political animals’. And when Aristotle said ‘good life’ as the purpose of the state, Thomas interprets it as ‘beatitudo’, which is eschatologically completed. Additionally, when Aristotle derives the need for a leader from the common good, which is the purpose of the state, Thomas reveals that the created order is for everyone to participate and contribute to the common good. When Thomas presents the nation as a ‘self-sufficient and most complete community’ and converges all individual goods, the result is expected to be the ‘individual’ being submerged in the state. However, Thomas rejects this by suggesting the internal limitations of the state. As a result, he is able to explore the possibility of ‘individual’ discourse against to the state totalism. Although the discourse on ‘individual’ does not appear in Thomas’ political thought, and although it is historically premature, when examining his various writings, it appears that Thomas emphasizes the individual and freedom of individual will and conscience. The possibility of discourse on ‘individuals’ is discovered.
