아우구스티누스는 거의 30년에 걸쳐서 적어도 5번 이상 창세기를 주해했다. 그는 성경해석에 있어서 본문의 참된 의미를 가지면서도 다양성을 지니는 해석들이 있다고 주장했다. 실제로 그의 창세기 해석은 갈수록 발전하였으며, 다양한 이해가능성을 제시했다. 본 논문은 창세기 1장 첫 몇 구절에 대한 아우구스티누스의 해석을 연구하였다. 아우구스티누스는 『마니교도 반박 창세기 해설』에서 창세기 본문에 대한 상징적 해석을 주로 시도한다. 반면에 그는 『창세기 문자적 해설 미완성작품』과 『창세기 문자적 해설』에서 문자적 해석을 추구한다. 그가 이렇게 다양한 해석을 시도한 이유는 각 작품을 출간했던 계기가 달랐기 때문이다. 하지만 그의 창세기 해석들은 큰 충돌은 보이지 않고 오히려 해석학적 발전과 풍부함을 보여준다. 그는 의미가 모호한 본문에 대해서는 섣부른 판단과 독단적인 해석을 경계하면서 여러 해석 가능성을 열어두기도 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 해석이 임의적으로 흐르지 않도록, 아우구스티누스는 저자의 의도, 문맥, 신앙의 규칙을 강조하였다. 아우구스티누스의 창세기 해석이 가지는 가장 큰 기여는 신앙의 규칙 속에서 기독론적이고 삼위일체적 성경 해석을 제시했다는 점이다. 그는 종말이 되면 성경의 참되고 완전한 의미가 드러난다고 보았다. 그와 동시에 그는 역설적으로 종말에는 말과 표지가 사라지고, 모든 그리스도인이 참된 말씀이신 예수 그리스도를 직접 뵙게 될 것이라 믿었다.

영문 초록

Augustine commented on Genesis at least five times over a period of nearly thirty years. He argued that there are many different interpretations of the text that capture its true meaning. Indeed, his interpretation of Genesis evolved as he went along, offering a variety of possibilities for understanding. This essay studies Augustine’s interpretation of the first few verses of Genesis 1. In his On Genesis Against the Manichees, Augustine primarily attempts a symbolic interpretation of the Genesis text. On the other hand, he pursues a literal interpretation in Unfinished Literal Commentary on Genesis and The Literal Meaning of Genesis. The reason for this diversity of interpretation is that he had different reasons for publishing each work. However, his interpretations of Genesis showed no major conflicts but rather hermeneutical development and richness. He was wary of rushing to judgment and dogmatic interpretation of texts that were ambiguous in their meaning, and he left open the possibility of multiple interpretations. Nevertheless, to prevent interpretation from becoming arbitrary, Augustine emphasized the author’s intent, context, and the rule of faith. The greatest contribution of Augustine’s interpretation of Genesis is that he presented a Christological and Trinitarian interpretation of Scripture within the rule of faith. He saw the true and full meaning of Scripture as revealed at the eschaton. At the same time, he believed that, paradoxically, at the eschaton, words and signs would disappear, and all Christians would see Jesus Christ, the true Word, face to face.
