국문 초록

제1차 대각성운동이 교회에 미친 영향에 대한 그동안의 연구들은 마치 대각성운동이 하나의 단일한 운동이었던 것처럼 대각성운동의 긍정적 영향과 부정적 영향을 평가했다. 하지만 당시 교회들은 다양한 형태로 대각성운동에 다르게 반응했기 때문에 대각성운동이 교회에 미친 영향에 대해 평가할 때 이들 그룹들을 구분해서 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 지금까지의 연구는 온건한 새빛파의 조나단 에드워즈와 옛빛파의 찰스 촌시 간의 논쟁을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. 그래서 본 연구는 온건파 또는 구칼뱅주의자 그룹과 온건한 새빛파보다 더 급진적이었던 급진적 새빛파 그룹이 교회에 미친 영향에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제시한다. 온건파 그룹은 대각성운동 당시 다수가 속해 있던 그룹이었다. 이들이 교회에 미친 영향은 기존 청교도주의의 영성에서 벗어나지 않으면서 종교적 열정을 불러일으키는 선에서 부흥운동을 수용하고, 또 교회가 큰 혼란을 겪지 않고도 열정을 회복할 수 있도록 도운 것이라고 평가할 수 있다. 급진적 새빛파는 대각성운동에 대한 부정적 평가의 대상이 되는 그룹이다. 본 연구에서는 급진적 새빛파에 대한 부정적 평가에 동의하면서도 이들이 결과적으로 교회에 기여한 부분도 있다고 주장한다. 급진적 새빛파가 기여한 부분은 반성직주의를 통해 기존의 전통적인 사회 계층 구조에 균열을 내고 평신도 사역의 가능성을 높인 것이다.

영문 초록

Previous studies of the impact of the First Great Awakening on the church have evaluated the positive and negative impacts of the Great Awakening as if it were a single, unified movement. However, the churches responded differently to the Great Awakening in a variety of ways at the time, it is necessary to look at these groups separately when evaluating the impact of the Great Awakening on the church. Previous Studies have centered on the debate between Jonathan Edwards, a moderate New Light, and Charles Chauncy, an Old Light. Therefore, this study suggests the need to study the impact of the moderates or Old Calvinists and the radical New Lights, which were more radical than the moderate New Lights, on the church. The Moderates were the majority group during the Great Awakening. Their impact on the church was embracing the revival in a way that stirred religious fervor without straying from the spirituality of traditional Puritanism and helping the church regain its passion without disrupting it. Most scholars make only negative assessments when evaluating the Radical New Lights. While this study agrees with their negative evaluations of the Radical New Lights, it argues that the Radical New Right also contributed to the church. Through their anti-clericalism, the Radical New Lights disrupted the traditional social hierarchy and increased the possibility of lay ministry.
