탄광문학에 나타난 ‘막장’의 장소성

국문 초록

한국사회에서 1960년대는 다양한 시대적 변화를 변곡점을 보여준다. 특히 군사정권의 등장은 당시 한국사회가 지닌 민주주의적 가치질서의 변화와 발전의 가능성을 무효화하고, 군사정권의 정당성 확보를 위해 반공과 경제개발의 담론을 강화시켰다. 경제개발은 당시 한국사회가 직면한 우선적 문제였음은 부정할 수 없다. 경제개발은 다수의 국민들에게 생존의 문제를 해결하는 것이었고, 보다 나은 삶에 대한 욕구를 충족하는 유효한 방식이었다. 이러한 경제개발의 토대에는 탄광지역의 개발이 자리한다. 저렴하고 효율적인 에너지원의 개발은 산업을 부흥할 수 있는 토대가 되었다. 1960년대 이후 한국사회의 급격한 변화의 과정에서는 산업화의 과정이 전제되어 있다. 한국문학에서 이러한 산업화와 맞물려 소외된 소시민의 삶과 이를 통한 인간적 삶과 가치에 대한 문학적 천착이 이루어졌다. 하지만, 탄광촌에 대한 문학적 형상화 내지 탄광문학을 통해 형상화 된 소시민의 삶에서 그들의 삶의 가치에 대한 탐색과 환기는 부족한 것 또한 사실이다. 따라서 본 논의는 탄광문학 특히 소설 텍스트를 중심으로 그 안에 형상화된 소시민의 삶을 통해 탄광문학의 단면을 논의해 보고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 탄광이라는 장소 혹은 공간이 문학을 통해 소비되는 양상을 살피고자 한다. 일반적으로 대중문화에서 소비되는 ‘막장’은 탄광에 대한 사회적 인식을 단적으로 보여준다. ‘막장’은 산업전사라는 국가 단위의 사회적 호명과 달리, 탄광 노동자들은 삶의 막다를 곳으로 내몰려야 했던 지난하고 고루한 삶을 상징적으로 나타낸다. 그들에게 탄광촌은 그들의 삶이 정주하는 곳이 아니라, 그들의 삶을 지탱하기 위해 필연적으로 머물러야 하는 공간임에 유의하고자 한다. 정주의 공간이 아닌 떠돎의 공간으로 탄광촌이 문학적 형상화 방식이 함의하는 사회적 가치 혹은 시대적 가치를 논의하고자 한다.

영문 초록

In Korean society, the 1960s marked an inflection point in various changes in the times. In particular, the emergence of the military regime nullified the possibility of change and development of the democratic value order of Korean society at that time, and strengthened the discourse of anti-communism and economic development in order to secure the legitimacy of the military regime. There is no denying that economic development was a priority issue facing Korean society at that time. Economic development was a solution to the problem of survival for the majority of the people, and it was a valid way of satisfying the desire for a better life. The foundation of this economic development is the development of coal mining areas. The development of cheap and efficient energy sources laid the foundation for the revival of industry. In the process of rapid changes in Korean society since the 1960s, the process of industrialization is premised. In Korean literature, this industrialization coincided with a literary examination of the lives of marginalized small citizens and the human life and values through them. However, it is well known that there is a lack of exploration and ventilation of the value of the lives of small citizens through the literary representation of coal mining towns or the lives of small citizens embodied through coal mining literature. Therefore, this discussion focuses on coal mining literature, especially novel texts, and tries to discuss the orientation of coal mining literature through the lives of small citizens embodied in it. Through these discussions, we will be able to examine the ways in which a place or space called a coal mine is consumed through literature. As a social symbol, “Makjang” clearly shows the social perception of coal mining. Contrary to the social label of industrial warriors, coal mine workers symbolize the difficult life they had to endure. It should be noted that for them, the coal mining town is not a place where they settle down, but a place where they must inevitably stay in order to have a better life. As a space of floating, not a space of settlement, we want to examine the social value or the value of the times that the coal mining town implies through its literary representation.
