국문 초록

모옌이 포크너와 마르케스의 영향을 받았다는 사실은 많은 사람들이 주지하는 바이지만, 모옌의 창작 시기에 대한 세밀한 고찰 없이 두 작가의 영향만 언급한다면, 개별 작품의 주제 의식을 정확히 이해하기 어렵다. 본고는 이 점에 착안하여 모옌의 대표작 중 하나인 『붉은 수수밭』이 문혁 이후 새로운 세계관을 찾으려는 작가의 의지가 표출된 작품이자, 문학적 대안을 모색하는 과정임을 밝히려 하였다. 『붉은 수수밭』은 ‘다수의 화자’, ‘의식의 흐름’ 등과 같은 모더니즘 수법을 사용하여 ‘근대적 규범 세계의 붕괴’를 표현하고, 인간과 세계의 본질을 탐색하고자 한 작품이다. 이를 설명하기 위해 먼저 작품 속에 나타나는 근대 규범 세계의 붕괴 양상을 살펴본 후, 그 폐허 위에 여전히 남아있는 더 이상 제거할 수 없는 삶과 생명의 본질적 요소들이 무엇인지 짚어보고, 그 본질적 요소들이 인류의 원형과 어떤 유사점들을 보이며 작가는 이를 통해 어떤 세계를 꿈꾸는가에 대해 칼 G. 융과 조지프 캠벨의 이론을 빌려 논하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Mo Yan was greatly influenced by William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as many people are aware, but it is difficult to accurately understand the thematic consciousness of each of his works by only mentioning the impacts of the two writers without a detailed consideration into his creative periods. To highlight his individuality and originality, Yan has specifically mentioned the times when he was influenced by Faulkner and the period when he was exposed to Marquez. From this, the researcher tries to demonstrate that Red Sorghum, one of Yan’s greatest works, depicts the process of his desire, which had been accumulated inside of him to search for a new world, being fulfilled through the rediscovery of a primitive community called Gaomi Dongbei Xiang. Mo Yan has expressed the “collapse of a modern normative world” and explored the essence of human beings and the world by using modern techniques, such as multiple speakers and stream of consciousness. This study examines the collapse patterns of a modern normative world in Yan’s work and found the essential elements of living and life that would remain on top of its ruins and could not be removed. His work discussed similarities between the essential elements and the archetypes of mankind as well as the worlds he dreamed of based on borrowing theories from Carl G. Jung and Joseph J. Campbell.
