국문 초록

본고는 대한제국기 학회지에 수록된 관련 글들을 통하여 ‘흥학’의 본질적인 지향과개념 변화 양상을 추적하고,변화한 ‘흥학’ 개념에 반영된 근대적 담론 체계는 무엇인가를 구체적으로 살펴보았다.대한제국기 학회지들을 살펴볼 때 흥학은 대한제국의‘식산’의 부흥과 ‘부국’ 진입의 기초로 강조되고 있다.이는 ‘흥학’=서구 열강의 ‘근대교육’이라는 등식에서 비롯된 것이기에 이 지점에서 ‘흥학’이라는 용어는 근대 교육을흥하게 하는 것으로 초점이 맞춰져 있음을 확인할 수 있다.한편 이와 같은 학문 진흥과 근대 교육은 구체적인 실천 덕목으로 ‘부국’과 ‘자강’을 전제로 한 ‘실용’에 초점이맞추어 졌다.이러한 상황 속에서 ‘과학’ 역시 실용으로 연결되게 되는데,이 과정에서‘과학’이라는 개념에 실증과 관련된 본질적인 조건은 생략되고 실용만이 강조되는 논리적인 비약이 발견된다. 문제는 당대 대한제국의 교육체제가 이러한 흥학의 움직임을 충분히 지지할 수 없는 상황이었다는 점에 있다.근대 교육을 통한 단계적이고 보편적인 발전이 불가능한상황 속에서 흥학의 개념은 점차 실용으로 축소되고 만다.그렇다면 이때 흥학이 꿈꾸었던 근대 국가는 실용만으로 성취될 수 있는가.흥학이 바라던 이상과는 다르게 실용으로 축소된 흥학으로는 국민의 계몽에도 과학 기술 발전을 통한 부강함에도 다다를수 없다.결국 대한제국시기 지식인들이 급하게 꿈꾸었던 근대 국가의 모습은 제한된흥학으로는 도달할 수 없는 이상으로만 남게 되는 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to track the essential orientation and conceptual change of ‘Heunghak’ through related articles contained in the journal of the Deahan Empire period and examine in detail the modern discourse system reflected in the changed concept of ‘Heunghak’. When looking at the journals of the Deahan Empire period, Heunghak was emphasized as the basis for the Deahan Empire’s revival of ‘production’ and entry into the ‘rich country’. This originated from the equation ‘Heunghak’ = ‘Modern education of Western powers’. Therefore, at this point, it can be seen that the term ‘heunghak’ was focused on promoting modern education. On the other hand, such academic promotion and modern education are focused on ‘practical use’ in the premise of ‘rich country’ and ‘self-reliance’ as specific practical virtues. In this situation, ‘science’ is linked to practical use, but in this process, a logical leap is found in which the concept of essential ‘science’ is omitted and only practical use is emphasized. The problem is that the educational system of the Deahan Empire at that time could not sufficiently support the activities of Heunghak. In a situation where phased and universal development through modern education is impossible, the concept of Heunghak gradually decreased to practical use. If so, can the modern state that Heunghak dreamed of at this time be achieved only by practical use? Unlike the ideal that Heunghak hoped for, Heunghak, which has been decreased to practical use, cannot reach the enlightenment of the people and prosperity through technological development. In the end, the appearance of the modern state, which intellectuals urgently dreamed of during the Deahan Empire, remains only an ideal that cannot be reached with limited heunghak.
