국문 초록

이 논문은 1920년대 멕시코의 사회적 맥락을 중심으로 티나 모도티의 사진을 독해한다. 모도티의 사진 대부분은 그녀가 약 7년 동안 멕시코에 체류했던 기간에 촬영되었다. 멕시코 사회는 작업의 배경이 되는 시공간일 뿐 아니라 창작의 동기이며 작업 변화의 원동력이었다. 혁명 이후 사회변혁기를 맞이한 멕시코에서 모도티는 전위예술가들 또는 국가의 문화 사업을 이끌어간 벽화가들과 어울리며 예술운동에 동참했다. 멕시코의 전위예술운동인 에스트리덴티스모를 위해 현대화와 도시화의 미감이 돋보이는 사진들을 제공했으며, 정치적 견해를 같이 하는 벽화가들의 작품을 기록하고 유포하는 데 이용할 수 있는 사진을 촬영해서 벽화운동을 지원했다. 농업학교의 성과를 기록한 작업도 당시 멕시코 사회가 요청하는 협업의 일부였다. 후대 페미니즘 미술사는 그 시대에 흔치 않았던 여성사진가가 더 높은 평가를 받을 수 있도록 노력했는데, 그 과정에서 등장한 관점이 사회적 맥락보다 여성성을 지나치게 강조했다는 부분은 재고해볼 필요가 있다. 원주민 여성을 촬영한 사진들은 사회구성원으로서 자신의 삶을 위해 투쟁하는 강인함을 갖춘 새로운 여성상을 멕시코 사회에 제시한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 모도티의 사진은 혁명 이후 멕시코에서 사회의 진보를 꿈꾸었던 작가가 역동적으로 고군분투하며 작업한 흔적이라는 점에서 의의가 크다.

영문 초록

This study explores Tina Modotti s photos focusing on the social context of Mexico in the 1920s. Most of Modotti’s photos were taken during her stay in Mexico for about seven years. For her work, Mexican society was not only the time-space of taking pictures, but the motive for creation and the driving force for change. Modotti participated in the art movement while having friendship with the avant-garde artists and the muralists who led the nation s cultural projects. For Estridentimo, an avant-garde movement in Mexico, she provided photos showing the aesthetics of modernization and urbanization. She also supported Mexican mural movement for the artists who shared their political views with her. They could use her photos to document and disseminate their mural works. The photographic recording of the achievements of the agricultural school was also a part of the collaboration requested by Mexican society at the time. Later feminist art historians tried to make the woman photographer who was rare at that time, more highly appreciated. Here, it is necessary to reconsider that such a viewpoint has often emphasized femininity over the social context. Her photos of indigenous women can be better understood as a new image of women representing their strength to fight for their own lives as members of society in Mexican society. Modotti s photos are meaningful in that the works are traces of the dynamic struggle of the artist who dreamed of social progress in post-revolutionary Mexico.
