국문 초록

신석기시대의 석기 연구에서 흑요석 석촉은 주요한 연구 대상이다. 반면 석촉과 함께 발굴되는다수의 데비타지는 주로 유적 내 석촉 제작의 증거로 간주되고 있으나 분석적으로 검증된 바 없다. 이에 본고는 석촉의 제작과 데비타지의 생산을 순차적인 관점에서 살펴보며 가덕도 장항 유적 데비타지를 대상으로 석촉 제작 과정에 상응하는 형태적 및 기술적 특성이 반영되어 있는지를 검토하였다. 데비타지를 분류하고 구체적인 속성을 추출할 수 있는 온전한 격지를 대상으로 계량적 분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과 길이와 모양 속성에서 대략 빈도가 높은 양봉분포가 드러났다. 일련의 패턴은 두 가지 이상의 격지떼기 방식과 형태적 차이가 존재한다는 점을 보여준다. 동시에 유적 내 체계적인 석촉 제작의 가능성을 입증한다. 이를 종합하여 큰 틀에서 몸돌을 준비하고, 격지를 떼어소재를 마련하고, 소재를 성형 및 잔손질하여 완성하는 단계로 석촉 제작 양상을 재구성하였다. 신석기시대 석기 연구에서 데비타지 분석에 초점을 맞추는 접근법은 장항 유적뿐만 아니라 남해안지역의 여러 유적에서 확인할 수 있는 흑요석 석촉의 체계적인 제작 과정을 식별하는 데 도움이 될 것이라 생각한다.

영문 초록

Obsidian arrowheads have been unearthed from many Neolithic sites, on the southern coast of Korea, while no systematic analysis has been conducted on the numerous wastes of obsidian lithic reduction processes. This study examines the manufacturing of arrowheads and production of debitage from a sequential perspective, and reviews whether debitage from Janghang, Gadeok-do reflects morphological and technical characteristics that correspond to the methodical stone arrowhead reduction stages. A quantitative analysis was conducted on completed flakes from which debitage can be separated to extract specific properties. Analysis results showed a bimodal distribution where frequencies were high for the properties of length and shape. A set of patterns not only demonstrates that there exist two or more flaking methods and forms, but also substantiates the possibility that arrowheads were produced methodologically within the site. Commonly accepted the stone arrowhead manufacturing processes include taking off flake blanks from the core, shaping a preform, and retouching through sophisticated methods such as pressure flaking to complete a stone artifact. While still incomplete in that detailed analysis of distribution of individual artifacts was not recorded and thus not considered, the analysis explores a new area of research of so far underestimated and disregarded artifacts known as debitage. A research approach in lithic studies that focuses on debitage analysis may contribute to identifying the manufacturing process of obsidian stone arrowheads unearthed not only at Janghang, but also at Neolithic sites along the southern coast of Korea.
