국문 초록

환경 파괴와 그로 인한 기후변화는 현재 인간의 가장 긴급한 문제로 부상했다. 훼손된 지구를 복구하고 인류에게 미칠 피해를 최소화하기 위한 노력과 반성의 움직임이 증가함에 따라 영국의 미술관들 역시 이러한 문제를 다루는 프로그램들과 실천들을 점점 더 많이 기획하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 영국의 미술관들이 환경 문제를 다루는 예술 실천들에 주목하는 근본적인 목적과 현재 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 적용하고 있는 방법을 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 문헌 연구와 사례 조사를 함께 진행한다. 먼저 문헌 연구의 경우 두 가지 주제를 중심으로 탐색된다. 첫째, 미술관의 본래적 기능과 역할은 무엇이며 그것들이 어떻게 변화했고 확장됐는지를 살펴본다. 둘째, 미술관의 환경적 책임이란 무엇이며 그것은 어떻게 효과적으로 발휘되며 왜 그것이 요구되는지에 대해 알아본다. 사례연구의 경우, 질적 연구 방식을 택하여, 영국의 테이트와 서펜타인 갤러리를 조사한다.

영문 초록

Along with this growing concern about problems such as the destruction of the environment and climate change, British art museums have increased the number of artistic practices dealing with these issues. The main research question of this dissertation is as follows: ‘Why and how do British art museums support artistic practice concerned with environmental issues?’ This paper begins with an overview of existing literature covering two themes: the discussion on how the role of the museum have changed and expanded, and the environmental responsibility of the museum, namely what it is, how it has been effectively achieved, and why it is required. The study is conducted as a qualitative research, which involves case studies of the Serpentine Gallery and Tate.
