<징세비태록>의 구성방식 고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 <징세비태록>에 나타난 지인지감 화소를 바탕으로 작품의 구성방식을 살핀 것이다. 이 작품은 청나라 건륭제 재위 시절을 배경으로 하여 안경과 화신의 대립을 주요한 내용으로 한다. 주인공 안경이 지인지감을 발휘하여 다양한 인물을 발탁하고 이들이 뛰어난 능력을 선보이며 나라를 위기에서 구하는 이야기이다. 지인지감을 통해 <징세비태록>은 차별화된 구성을 취할 수 있었는데 첫째, 부자 간 서사를 독특하게 배열하고 있다는 것이다. 아버지에서 아들로 시간적 순서에 따라 일방향으로 흐르는 진행을 하지 않고 안경에서 아들로, 다시 안경으로 사건 전개의 주체가 변화한다. 안경이 지인지감으로 인재를 알아보고 그들이 능력을 펼치는 이야기를 배열하면서 자연스럽게 안경의 서사 속에 아들의 이야기가 안기는 구조를 이루게 되었다. 둘째, 여성인물에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 선인과 악인의 대비를 선명하게 하고 있다는 것이다. 이 작품에서 안경과 화신의 대결을 보면 조정 내에서의 정치적인 세력 다툼 정도로 요약될 수 있다. 악인으로 형상화된 화신의 경우 다른 고전소설의 반동인물처럼 황제를 배반하거나 반란군과 내통하지 않는 것이다. 그러므로 선인과 악인을 명확하게 구분할 수 있는 기준은 바로 여성에 대한 인식의 차이로 제시된다. 지인지감을 지녀 성별에 관계없이 동일한 인격체로서 타인을 존중하고 그 능력을 인정할 수 있는 인물은 안경과 같은 선인인 것이고, 여성의 능력에 대한 이해와 관심이 전무하고 여색만 탐하는 인물은 화신과 같은 악인인 것이다. 셋째, 주동인물과 조력인물의 협력 관계가 잘 드러나고 있다는 것이다. 주인공은 지인지감을 지녔으나 이것만으로는 대결에서 승리하기가 어렵고 지감으로 선택된 인물들의 도움이 필요하다. 그리하여 주동인물인 지자가 선택한 피지자들의 활약으로 사건이 해결되는데 이러한 과정에서 지자와 피지자 사이의 협력이 부각되고 있다. 또한 주동인물이 피지자인 경우에도 지자인 보조인물이 적극적으로 조력하여 피지자의 성공에 기여한다. 이처럼 지인지감을 활용하여 <징세비태록>을 구성한 결과, 영웅적 면모를 특정 인물에게만 부여하지 않고 다양한 인물에게 나누어주어 보다 현실적이고 개연성 있는 전개가 가능해졌다. 그리고 화이론에 의거하여 송이나 명만을 절대적으로 좇던 다른 고전소설에 비하여 이 작품에서는 지인지감을 가진 인물이 충성하는 나라가 청이므로 백성을 위한 정치가 이루어진다면 청이라도 상관없다는 현실 인식을 표명할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 여성의 능력을 긍정하여 비범한 재능을 가진 인물이라면 성별과 관계없이 인재가 될 수 있고 그들이 적재적소에 쓰이도록 발탁하는 것이 중요하고 선한 행위라는 사실을 강조할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Jingsebitaerok is a classical novel describing the confrontation between Angyeong and Hwasin set in Emperor Geonleung of the Qing Dynasty. This novel is mainly about Angyeong, who had a tremendous discerning ability to see human nature in selecting talented people, and those who could cope with national crisis and ultimately castigate treacherous Hwasin’s group. In this process, the novel uses a sense of putting the right man in the right place as a tool that enables to play a crucial role in the overall composition of this work. Firstly, in terms of the primary composition method achieved through discerning ability to see human nature in this work, the narrative between father and son is carefully arranged. The story of Angyeong, who had a great sense of discerning ability to see human nature, had discovered talented people, including his own sons, and their abilities revealing was naturally able to form a structure which Angyeong’s narrative embraces his two sons’ stories. Secondly, the contrast between the good and the bad was made clear through female characteristics. In this work, the standard for dividing good and evil people is the difference in the perception of women. With a discerning ability to see human nature for appreciating courtesy for human beings and recognizing others’ abilities, people could be good like Angyeong. While people only consider women to fulfill their needs, they become bad like Hwasin. Thirdly, the cooperation between the leading and subsidiary characters is highlighted. Disputes are resolved by the leading character with a discerning ability to see human nature and other characters chosen by him. The cooperative relationship between them is revealed in this process. In addition, when the active characters are chosen by a sense of a discerning ability to see human nature, subsidiary characters actively help out and eventually contribute to the success of the leading character. As a result of the composition of the work using a sense of a discerning ability to see human nature, unrealistic aspect of the work was alleviated, and relatively probable development was available because heroism was distributed not only to certain characters but also to various ones. It reveals a sense of theme that it would not matter if the Qing Dynasty were a country where good people could show their abilities. In addition, this work embraces the perception that a person with an ability to lead the world in the right direction and to recognize others’ abilities can be an asset for the country regardless of gender.
