국문 초록

이 연구는 사회정의 교육의 관점에서 고등학교 문학 교과서에 수록된 다문화 소설제재의 타당성을 검토하려는 목적으로 수행되었다. Picower (2012)가 제안한 다문화 사회정의 교육의 여섯 단계를 핵심범주로 삼아 교과서에 수록된 소설 5편의 타당성을 분석한 결과, 현재의 제재들은 주로 1~3단계에 집중되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 자아(정체성), 배려, 존중 등의 개인적 차원에 치우침으로써 다문화 사회의 실제적 문제를 소략하게 다루거나, 다문화 사회정의의 문제를 ‘사랑’과 같은 보편적 문제로 접근함으로써 문화적 차이로부터 기인하는 사회적 문제의 특수성을 제대로 다루지 못하는 것이다. 교과서에서 안내문이나 학습 활동을 통해 제재의 한계를 부분적으로 보완하기도 하나, 이러한 항목들이 지닌 효과가 교사나 교수·학습 맥락에 따라 상이할 수 있다는 점에서 앞으로 더 고민할 지점이 있다. 이 연구는 개인적 차원에 주로 맞추어지던 기존 다문화 교육의 초점을 사회적으로확장하였다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study reviews the validity of multicultural reading materials contained in high school literature textbooks from the perspective of social justice education. As an analysis of five novels using Picower’s (2012) six elements of multicultural social justice curriculum design as key categories, current reading materials mainly focused on 1-3 levels (i.e., self-love and knowledge, respect for others, and issues of social injustice). They do not properly show the value of cultural difference by approaching the practical matters of multicultural social justice from a personal dimension or by assuming them as common humanity issues such as interpersonal romantic relationships. Although the limitations of reading materials are partially compensated for through instructions or learning activities in textbooks, their effects may differ depending on instructors or contexts, which are points of concern. This study is meaningful in that it extended the focus of previous multicultural education, which was mainly focused on the personal dimension, to the social dimension.
