국문 초록

이 논문은 17세기 일본 관리 사이토호센이 작성한 보고서 즉, ‘은주시청합기(隱州視聽合記)에 대한 해석을 검토하고 있다. 이 보고서에는 “隠州在北海中故云隠岐嶋 然則日本乾地以此州為限矣”의 기록을 두고 한국과 일본측이 서로 상반된 주장을 하고 있다. 즉, 일본측은 17세기 일본 영토의 서북쪽 한계는 울릉도와 독도이며, 한국측은 오키섬이라고 주장하고 있다. 일본 학자 이케우치 사토시 교수에 의해 분석한 내용을 일본의 시모조 마사오 교수가 반박하고 있다. 과거 오키섬의 지도에 독도가 포함되지 않았지만, 2010년 시마네현 지도에는 독도를 ’竹島‘라고 표시하여 일본 영토로 표시하고 있다. 일본 외무성이 주장하고 있는 17세기 고유영토론 즉, 일본측의 역사적 권원을 부정할 수 있는 귀중한 사료이다.

영문 초록

This Article examines the translation of Saito Hosen’s ‘Report(“Onshu Shicho Goki”) on Oki District’. In this document Oki Islands and the vicinity are described in detail and maps of Oki Districts were included. There are disputes over this historical record relevant to translation of the character “州” in the final line of this passage. Thus, the interpretation of 隠州在北海中故云隠岐嶋 Oki (州 = district) is in the center of the North Sea so it is named Okishima… (嶋 = island) and So then, the northwest of Japan, we make this “州” (州= district or island?) to be the boundary( 然則日本乾地以此州為限矣 ). The Japanese interpretation of the Saito Hosen s Report’ falls apart even by the end of the first introductory sentence. Here it was written “Oki(district) is in the center of the North Sea so it is named Oki Island…” In other words, the Okinoshima Island group itself was the district. Of course that would exclude Ulleungdo and Dokdo which are not part of the Oki Islands and Saito Hosen’s map included with the report confirms this. Note Ulleungdo and Dokdo are not to be found anywhere on the maps of Oki District.
