<장복선전>의 사회병리에 대한 대응과 서사적 지향

국문 초록

이 논문은 <장복선전>에 나타난 사회병리에 대한 대응과 지향의식을 살핀 것이다. 먼저 작품에 나타난 사회병리를 살피고, 이어서 그 사회병리에 어떻게 대응했는지 단계적으로 파악하였다. 이를 바탕으로 이 작품의 지향을 검토하였다. 먼저 <장복선전>에 나타난 사회병리를 확인하였다. 사회병리를 두 가지로 나누어 파악하였다. 하나는 경제적인 분배의 불공정성, 다른 하나는 법 집행의 경직성이 그것이다. 전자는 관고(官庫)에 재화가 과도하게 축적되어 있음에 반해 백성들은 기본 생활조차 어려운 빈궁함이, 후자는 관고의 재화를 선용했음에도 불구하고 사형이 집행되는 것을 문제로 인식하였다. 다음으로 <장복선전>에 나타난 사회병리에 대한 대응을 검토하였다. 장복선은 개인적인 차원에서 사회병리를 진단하고 대응에 나선다. 그는 관고의 재화를 반출하여 빈민을 구제하는 데 쓴다. 위법한 수단이지만 재화가 선용되도록 하여 정의를 실행한 셈이 되었다. 하지만 국고를 유용한 죄가 엄중하여 사형수로 전락하고 만다. 사회병리에 대한 개인적인 처방과 대응의 한계를 보인 것이다. 장복선의 구명을 위해 집단이 나서서 해결책을 모색한다. 빈민을 위해 재화를 선용했음에도 불구하고 사형이 집행되는 잘못을 집단이 나서서 시정을 촉구한 것이다. 그 결과 부족한 은을 충당하고, 장복선도 방면될 수 있었다. 집단의 저력을 통해 사회병리를 해결한 것이라 하겠다. 끝으로 사회병리에 대한 대응과 지향의식을 고찰하였다. 이 작품은 두 단계에 걸쳐 지향의식을 보이고 있다. 첫 번째로 장복선을 내세워 민중의 자의식을 부각하고, 그러한 자의식의 발현으로 하층민의 빈궁을 해결하고자 했다. 하지만 자의식을 가진 개인의 힘만으로는 사회적인 난제를 타개할 수 없었다. 두 번째로 자의식을 가진 개개인이 결속하여 집단으로 대응하면서 사회병리를 해결하고자 했다. 강한 힘을 가진 상층의 소수가 사회를 지배하는 것이 아니라 약하지만 각성한 개개인의 결속이 사회를 정의롭게 만드는 것으로 본 것이다. 민중의식이 새로운 힘의 원천이 되고, 그러한 힘이 새로운 지배질서를 마련할 수 있음을 보인 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the response and orientation to the social pathology shown in Jangbokseonjeon. First, I looked at the social pathology that appeared in the work, and then I grasped step by step how to respond to the social pathology. Based on this, the author s intention was reviewed. First, the social pathology shown in Jangbokseonjeon was confirmed. The social pathology was divided into two categories. One is the unfairness of economic distribution, and the other is the rigidity of law enforcement. In the former case, there was an excessive accumulation of goods in the government office, while the people had difficulty in basic life, and the latter viewed the execution of the execution despite the good use of the government’s goods. Next, the response to the social pathology shown in Jangbokseonjeon was reviewed. Jang Bok-seon diagnoses social pathology on a personal level and takes action. He exports the government s goods and uses it to relieve the poor. Although it was an illegal means, it became a form of practicing righteousness by making good use of it. However, he was seriously guilty of using the national treasury, and he was condemned to death. It can be said that it shows the limitations of personal prescription and response to social pathology. In order to save Jang Bok-seon, a group comes up and seeks a solution. Despite the use of goods for the poor, the death penalty was executed by the group and called for correction. As a result, insufficient silver is covered and Jang Bok-seon is also released. He could say that he solved the social pathology through the power of the group. Finally, the response to social pathology and a sense of orientation were considered. This work shows a sense of orientation in two stages. First, it was to highlight the people s self-consciousness by advocating Jang Bok-seon, and to solve the poverty of the lower class through the manifestation of such self-consciousness. However, only the power of self-conscious individuals could not overcome social difficulties. Second, self-conscious individuals united and responded as a group to solve social pathologies. It is not that a few of the upper classes with strong power dominate society, but the solidarity of weak but awakened individuals that make society justice. It can be said that people s consciousness becomes a source of new power, and that power can establish a new governing order.
