국문 초록

雲養 金允植(1835~1922)은 구한말 마지막 대제학을 지낸 인물로 개화파 지식인이다. 동양 전통지식에 밝고 서구 문물에도 해박한 그는 詩文등의 문학작품은 물론 서예, 회화, 음악 등의 예술의 여러 영역에까지 광범위하게 창작활동을 하였다. 김윤식은 치열한 작가의식을 갖고 있었으며 문학과 문학 이론, 예술론이 하나의 유기적 구조를 이루고 있음을 알 수 있다. 한편으로 주목되는 사실은 그의 예술론은 개화지식인으로서 구한말 시대변화에 따른 예술에 대한 인식변화를 잘 보여준다는 점이다. 본고는 김윤식 예술론의 특징을 구명하고 이어 문학론과의 유기적 관계를 밝히는데 집중하였다. 김윤식의 예술론을 서예, 회화, 음악으로 크게 구분하여 그 특징을 고찰해보면 다음과 같다. 서예에 있어서는 먼저 마음가짐을 바르게 할 것을 언급하였고 이어 법도에 맞게 연마하고, 이후에는 자신만의 서체를 완성할 것을 독려하였다. 회화에 있어서는 법칙의 정석을 깨달아 법 이외의 묘리를 터득하여 마음과 손이 그렇게 하지 않으려해도 저절로 그렇게 되는 신기하고 영묘한 경지인 神韻을 터득할 것을 강조하였다. 마지막으로 음악에 있어서는 여러 사람들과 어울리는 삶을 통해 자연과의 조화를 꾀하려고 한 특징이 돋보였다. 김윤식의 문학론과 예술론을 대비해 볼 때, 약간 표현의 차이는 있으나 본질적으로 일치하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그에 의하면 문학의 창작에서 제시한 단계는 修身 → 博學 → 法外 → 神韻으로 정리할 수 있고, 예술의 완성에 이르는 과정은 마음가짐 → 模倣 → 法外 → 神韻으로 규정할 수 있다. 그는 ‘神’의 경지에 들어서야만 문학이나 예술이 완성될 수 있다고 단정하였다. 김윤식은 예술의 본질에 대해 깊이 이해하고 있었던 인물로 고차원적인 예술론을 완성해 놓았다. 이 예술론은 그의 문학론과 내적으로 긴밀하게 연계되어 있다는 점이 가장 큰 특징이다. 이로 인해 그의 문학세계나 예술비평이 한 단계 격상될 수 있었다고 판단된다. 김윤식의 예술론에 대한 이해는 궁극적으로 그의 문학세계를 보다 진실하고도 깊이 있게 해준다는 관점에서 의미 있는 일이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

Unyang(雲養) Kim Yoon-sik(金允植) (1835-1922) was an intellectual of the enlightenment movement in the late Joseon Dynasty, who served as the last Daejehak. He was well versed in traditional knowledge of the East and knowledgeable about Western culture as well, and was involved in a wide range of creative activities, including calligraphy, painting, and music as well as literary works such as prose and poetry. Kim Yoon-sik had a fierce sense of author, and his literature, literary theory, and art theory formed one organic structure. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that his art theory, as an intellectual of the enlightenment movement, demonstrates a change in the perception of art in response to changes in the era of the late Joseon Dynasty. This article focuses on bringing light on the characteristics of Kim Yoon-sik s art theory and its organic relationship with literature theory. Kim Yoon-sik s art theory can be divided into calligraphy, painting, and music. As for the characteristics of calligraphy, he mentioned that one should first have a proper mindset, followed by honing according to the custom, and encouraged one to complete his own style. In painting, he emphasized that one should learn the standard of law, find the exquisite principle beyond the law, and realize the mysterious and ethereal level of the mind and hands, which naturally move despite oneself. Finally, in music, he showed a distinctive aspect to harmonize with nature. When comparing Kim Yoon-sik s literary and artistic theories, there is a slight difference in expression, but it can be confirmed that they are essentially consistent. According to him, the steps in the creation of literature can be summarized as moral training(修身) → knowledge(博學) → exquisite principle beyond the law(法外) → divine spirit(神韻), and the process of entering into the perfection of art can be identified as mindset → immitation(模倣) → exquisite principle beyond the law(法外) → divine spirit(神韻). He concluded that both literature and art could be completed only if one entered the level of God(神) . Kim Yoon-sik was a person who had a deep understanding of the nature of art and completed a high-dimensional art theory. The biggest feature of his art theory is that it is closely linked internally to his literary theory. As a result, it is believed that his literary world and art criticism could be upgraded to the next level. The understanding of Kim Yoon-sik s art theory is meaningful in terms of making his literary world more sincere and profound.
