고전의 현대적 변용과 스토리텔링에 대한 고찰— 웹툰 <호랑이형님>을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 웹툰 <호랑이형님>을 중심으로 중국 고전 및 동아시아 상상력이 한국의 문화콘텐츠로 수용된 양상을 분석한 것이다. 뉴미디어 시대에 이르러 문화산업에 대한 사회적 관심이 높아지고 있고, 그 과정에서 고전을 활용하여 성공하는 사례가 적지 않다. 이에 문화 콘텐츠 원형으로서 고전이 가지고 있는 가치를 인정하고, 이를 학술적으로 연구할 필요성이 제기된다. 웹툰 <호랑이형님>이 큰 인기를 얻을 수 있는 이유는 무엇보다 기존의 판타지 작품에서 볼 수 없었던 새로운 상상력의 세계를 보여주었다는 데 있다. <虎叱>, 《山海經》 등 고전에 기반한 스토리텔링, 샤머니즘, 도교적 사유 등을 활용한 상상력은 마법, 연금술사, 요정 등 서구의 신화나 판타지에 익숙해져 있는 독자들에게 새롭고 참신한 느낌을 주기에 충분하다. <호랑이형님>은 독특한 시공간을 설정하였고, 익숙한 고전을 새로운 방식으로 스토리텔링하였으며, 기괴함을 한층 더 부각시키며 캐릭터를 개발해내었다. 환상과 현실을 뒤섞고, 익숙함을 낯선 느낌으로 뒤바꾸었으며, 그로테스크함을 미의 영역으로 끌어와 새로운 상상력의 세계를 보여주고 있다. 이는 모두 고전적 상상력에서 영감을 얻은 것으로 향후 새로운 판타지를 창출해낼 수 있는 근원으로서 고전의 가치에 주목해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes an aspect in which Chinese classics and East Asian Imagination is accepted as Korean cultural contents around a webtoon Big Brother Tiger. In the era of new media where social interest in the cultural industry is increasing, it is necessary to pay attention to the value of classics as the prototype of cultural content and study them academically. The reason why Big Brother Tiger is so popular is, above all, that it has shown a new world of imagination that has not been seen in existing fantasy works. The imagination using storytelling based on classical works such as Hu Chi, Shanhaijing, shamanism, and Taoist is enough to give new feelings to readers who are familiar with Western myths and fantasies such as magic, alchemist and fairy. Big Brother Tiger set a unique time and space, presented familiar classics in a new way, and developed characters while further highlighting the bizarreness.
