연구개발투자가 재무성과 및 특허성과에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 「2015년 1,000대 R&D 투자 기업 스코어보드」를 활용하여 기업의 연구개발투자활동이 기업의 성과에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 확인함으로써 기업들의 자발적인 연구개발투자의 유인을 제공함을 목적으로 한다. 「2015년 1,000대 R&D 투자 기업 스코어보드」상의 기업들은 연구개발투자액의 순서에 따라 선정된 기업들로써 1,000대 기업에 포함된 기업들을 명실상부한 우리나라의 연구개발투자선도 기업으로 정의하고, 이에 대한 비교집단으로 연구개발투자 1,001∼2,000대 기업을 구성하여 두 집단 각각의 연구개발투자가 기업의 당해 연도 및 차기연도의 재무성과와 특허성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 실증분석을 수행하였다. 매출총액이익률과 수출액으로 측정한 재무성과의 경우 매출총이익률은 1,000대 기업이 비교집단에 비하여 더 우수한 결과를 나타냈으며, 수출액의 경우 연구개발투자가 더 많을수록 기업의 차기연도의 수출액에까지 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 그리고 연구개발투자에 따른 특허출원 및 특허등록 수 또한 연구개발투자 1,000대 기업이 비교집단에 비해 상대적으로 더 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 보여줌으로써 연구개발투자가 더 많을수록 기업의 성과가 더 우수할 것이라는 가설을 지지하는 결과를 도출하였다. 실증분석을 통해 확인된 연구개발투자가 기업 성과에 미치는 긍정적인 결과는 단기적인 기업 수익성의 악화를 염려하여 투자를 기피하고 있는 기업들에게 연구개발투자를 유도할 수 있는 유용한 정보를 제공함과 동시에, 경영자의 의사결정 과정에 있어 연구개발투자가 기업성과에 미치는 영향을 정확히 파악할 수 있게 해줌으로써 연구개발투자의 촉진과 그에 맞춘 기업경영전략을 세울 수 있는 근거자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

This research is aimed at providing businesses with incentives for voluntary research and development by identifying positive effects of research and development on business performance using 「2015. R&D Scoreboard Top 1000 Companies」. Unlike previous R&D-related papers that mainly used data from listed firms, the Scoreboard used in this analysis is more comprehensive and systematic since the Science and Technology Policy Institute has taken into consideration company bodies subject to external audit. Companies on the 「2015. R&D Scoreboard Top 1000 Companies」 were selected based on the amount of money spent on R&D. We assumed that companies listed on the scoreboard are the ones that take the lead in R&D area in Korea, and conducted an empirical analysis, comparing top 1000 companies on the scoreboard against companies ranked from 1001st to 2000th to find out the effects the investment in R&D has on financial and patent performance for pertinent year and the next year in each group. We confirmed that the top 1000 companies had higher gross profit margin in comparison to the comparative group, and when it comes to the export amounts, a large investment had positive impacts on next year’s export amounts. In addition, a larger investment in R&D turned out to lead to more patent applications and registrations, which supports the hypothesis that more investment in R&D would lead to better business performance. The positive effects of R&D investment demonstrated above would induce businesses that have been reluctant to make investments in R&D for fear of losing profitability to change their minds as well as allow business owners to understand exactly the impacts R&D investment has on their business, helping them establish proper business strategies.
