‘고학생 드라마’의 등장과 ‘상호부조’의 극장화

국문 초록

조명희의 <김영일의 사>는 1920년 이후 사회적 이슈로 급부상한 고학생 문제, 그 담론 및 서사와 밀접하게 교호(交互)하면서 등장했던 ‘고학생 드라마’ 중 하나였다. 그리고 특히 『동아일보』에 대서특필되어 사회적으로 적지 않은 파장을 일으켰던 실화(實話) ‘이동화의 죽음’을 모티프로 했다. 고학생 드라마는 조선사회의 현실을 무대화하면서 ‘상호부조’라는 새로운 사회적 원리를 극장화하였으며, 이러한 점에서 고학생 드라마는 우리 연극사에 처음 등장했던 사회극이었으며 근대극이었다. 여기서 고학생 드라마라는 용어는 고학생을 주인공으로 하거나 고학생이 처한 현실의 문제를 다루었던 연극과 희곡을 일차적으로 지칭하며, 동시에 당시 신문과 잡지 등을 통해 활발히 생산되고 있었던 고학생 담론 및 그 서사를 포괄한다. 하나의 연극/희곡은 작가의 의도를 온전히 구현하는 자기충족적 예술작품이라기보다, 하나의 문화적 가공물로서 그것이 속해 있었던 역사적 시공간 속에서 작동하고 있었던 담론들이 상호작용하는 결과이다. 사회문화적으로 1921년 여름에는 각종 학생/청년 단체들에 의해 강연회나 연설회, 음악회, 연극공연 등과 같은 문화운동이 활발히 전개되었다. 이들 문화운동은 버틀런트 러셀의 개조론과 함께 크로포트킨의 사회부조론을 토대로 했다. 그리고 이 중 사회부조론은 기존의 사회진화론을 비판하면서, 우승열패와 경쟁보다 인간 사회의 공동체성과 상호부조의 사회원리를 강조하였다. 문화운동의 관점에서 볼 때 고학생 문제 역시 개개인의 운명이 아니라 사회적으로 해결되어야 하는 과제로 간주되었다. 동우회나 갈돕회의 전국순회공연은 ‘동정’과 ‘상부상조’의 원리를 사회적으로 극장화하였으며, 전국 각 지역을 하나의 조선/사회로 심상화(心像化)키고 그것이 하나의 공동체라는 컨센서스를 형성, 강화시켰다. 그리고 이러한 조선/사회는 국가통치의 사각지대를 보완하는 순수한 사회의 영역이 아니라 오히려 식민통치의 균열을 비판적으로 드러내는 대항문화적인 성격을 지녔다. <김영일의 사>의 대본과 공연을 둘러싼 검열과 통제는 자선과 기부 문화가 만들어내는 조선 사회를 불온하게 바라보는 식민당국의 시선을 보여주는 것이었다.

영문 초록

The Death of Kim Young-il written by Cho Myung-hee was one of ‘working students dramas’ that emerged from working students problems, discourses, and narratives which were major social issues around 1920. ‘The Death of Lee Dong-hwa,’ which made the headlines in the Dong-A Ilbo (Dong-A Daily News), was used as the motif in The Death of Kim Young-il. ‘Working students dramas’ showcased not only the reality of Chosun society but also mutual aid as a new social principle. In this respect, ‘working students dramas’ were the first social and modern dramas in Korean theatrical history. ‘Working students dramas’ refers primarily to dramas and plays that featured ‘working students dramas’ or dealt with the realities of working students. They also covered the discourses of and narratives about working students that were being published in newspapers and magazines at the time. A play or drama is not a self-sufficient work of art which fully embodies the artist s intention, but is the result of interactions between discourses found in particular time and place in which it was produced, making it a cultural artifact. In the summer of 1921, various groups of students and young people were giving rise to a cultural movement through lectures, speeches, concerts, and theatrical performances. This cultural movement was based on Kropotkin’s idea of ‘mutual aid’ and Butler Russell’s idea of ‘reconstruction.’ ‘Mutual aid’ was critical of social Darwinism and emphasized mutual support as the foundation of human society rather than competition and the survival of the fittest. Thus, from the perspective of mutual aid, the problems of working students were regarded as situation to be solved socially, not individually. The nationwide tours of The Dongwoo(同友會) and The Caltrop(갈돕會) staged the principles of sympathy and mutual aid, helping to form consensus in which the nation could be imaged as a Chosun society. This Chosun society would not be a purely social area which existed in the blind spots of national rule, but rather had a counter- cultural character which critically revealed the cracks in the colonial rule of Japan. The censorship and control over the script and performance of The Death of Kim Young-il revealed the colonial authorities’ suspicious attitude about Chosun society.
